{"id":60172,"date":"2014-02-05T23:56:14","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T06:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/bears-boys-fall-to-quality-teams\/"},"modified":"2014-02-06T06:56:14","modified_gmt":"2014-02-06T06:56:14","slug":"bears-boys-fall-to-quality-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/bears-boys-fall-to-quality-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Bears boys fall to quality teams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=a9dc7208-2ce8-4e0b-a677-2a226bf2fca1&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1640\" height=\"1974\" alt=\"Jackson Vermeaule forcibly defends Ignacio's Adison Jones during a Bears loss to Ignacio on Jan. 30.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Jackson Vermeaule forcibly defends Ignacio's Adison Jones during a Bears loss to Ignacio on Jan. 30.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Joel Priest\/Pine River Times<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After facing off against two of the San Juan Basin League\u2019s best teams, the Dolores High School boys basketball team has a better sense of where it is and where it wants to be.<\/p>\n<p>Ignacio crushes Dolores<\/p>\n<p>Kicking off last week in Ignacio on Jan. 30, the Bears were dominated from start to finish, falling 87-21.<\/p>\n<p>Currently the top-ranked 2A team in Colorado, Ignacio attacked Dolores from inside and out, opening up an 18-4 lead after one quarter and taking a 39-9 lead into the locker room at halftime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy young guys aren\u2019t ready for that kind of competition,\u201d said Bears\u2019 head coach Larry Schwartz. \u201cIgnacio is a great team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leading the Bears in scoring were Jackson Vermeule and Ben Lykins, who contributed five points each.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Biery also managed to score two buckets, contributing four points to the Bears\u2019 cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIgancio plays a lot of games over the summer and it shows,\u201d said Schwartz, summing up the contest.<\/p>\n<p>Norwood blasts Bears<\/p>\n<p>Continuing their difficult week, the Bears travelled to Norwood on Feb. 1, again falling victim to one of the San Juan Basin League\u2019s top teams during a 68-22 loss.<\/p>\n<p>After playing well during a first quarter that ended with them trailing 14-5, the Bears struggled to contain Norwood\u2019s offensive attack and entered halftime trailing 31-12.<\/p>\n<p>Keying the Bears\u2019 demise was the physicality of Norwood\u2019s post players, who continually out muscled smaller Dolores players on the glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re physical and we\u2019re just not a very big basketball team,\u201d said Schwartz.<\/p>\n<p>Even after the Bears\u2019 tough loss however, Schwartz expressed satisfaction with the performance of some of his young players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCody Gregory played well for us,\u201d Schwartz said. \u201cHe\u2019s going to be a good player. He just needs some development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With their record now standing at 4-9 on the season, the Bears will next travel to Ouray for a road matchup on Feb. 7.
