{"id":56428,"date":"2013-10-29T21:26:55","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T03:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/feds-award-mesa-verde-visitor-center\/"},"modified":"2026-03-29T15:53:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T15:53:34","slug":"feds-award-mesa-verde-visitor-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/feds-award-mesa-verde-visitor-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Feds award Mesa Verde visitor center"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Bestowed by the U.S. Department of Energy, the honor recognizes the visitor and research center as a high-performance sustainable building.<\/p>\n<p>The award is based on demonstrated use of energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, recycling and environmentally preferable materials.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in December, the center received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum rating by the U.S. Green Building Council.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s highest certification, officials said it was a difficult achievement because the building serves more than 570,000 park visitors each year and houses more than 3 million artifacts requiring strict environmental controls.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the landscape design achieved certification from the Sustainable Sites Initiative. The honor, in part, recognizes the facility\u2019s use of stormwater for irrigation.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the 24 tribes associated with Mesa Verde contributed to the building and exhibits design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:tbaker@cortezjournal.com\">tbaker@cortezjournal.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bestowed by the U.S. Department of Energy, the honor recognizes the visitor and research center as a high-performance sustainable building.
