There were 24 alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities, with six in the days surrounding Halloween. To combat this, the Colorado Department of Transportation will partner with the Colorado State Patrol and law enforcement agencies across the state to crackdown on impaired drivers beginning Oct. 30 through Nov. 4. Last year, 570 drivers were arrested for DUI during the same period.

“These fatalities are much more than a statistic to us. They represent lives lost unnecessarily to impaired driving,” says Darrell Lingk, Director of the Office of Transportation Safety at CDOT. “We know that Halloween is a time for fun and celebration so we encourage users of Colorado roadways to enjoy themselves, but do so responsibly.”

Impaired drivers who are arrested for DUI could face jail time and stiff fines totaling more than $10,270. Even first-time offenders can lose their driver’s license and have an ignition interlock device on their vehicle for up to two years.

“As you make your Halloween plans, don’t forget to designate a sober driver,” said Col. Scott Hernandez, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “We will be out in full force ensuring that our roads are safe from impaired drivers. Don’t trade your costume for a real jail jumpsuit by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

The Heat Is On campaign runs throughout the year with 12 specific DUI enforcement periods centered on national holidays and large public events.
