Michael Bennet and Mark Udall, D-Colo., and U.S. Reps. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez; Cory Gardner, R-Yuma; Ed Perlmutter, D-Golden; and Mike Coffman, R-Aurora.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is, of course, nothing Congress can do to prevent the next drought from occurring,\u201d they wrote. \u201cBut lawmakers in Washington can provide a responsible five-year policy roadmap for agriculture through the Farm Bill. Reauthorizing this important legislation would inject certainty into the entire food supply chain \u2013 from processors, to transporters, to consumers \u2013 and provide farmers and ranchers with the tools they need to manage the dry conditions and to plan for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The politicians noted Colorado\u2019s $40 billion agricultural sector in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>For farmers and ranchers in the Centennial State, \u201cwhether or not they can borrow money is based on what the Farm Bill looks like,\u201d Bennet spokesman Adam Bozzi said.<\/p>\n<p>Bennet is a member of the Senate committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Tipton is a member of the House Committee on Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Udall and nine other senators sent a letter to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry asking the committee to add funding for livestock disaster assistance programs to the 2013 Farm Bill.<\/p>\n<p>The senators wanted to provide aid \u2013 similar to federal crop insurance programs available to farmers \u2013 to livestock producers across the country in the face of drought conditions, The Durango Herald previously reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2008 Farm Bill expired in September, although parts were extended through the so-called \u201cfiscal cliff\u201d deal in January.
