{"id":53611,"date":"2020-06-02T19:59:26","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T01:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/hundreds-in-farmington-protest-for-end-to-police-violence\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T04:05:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T10:05:07","slug":"hundreds-in-farmington-protest-for-end-to-police-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/hundreds-in-farmington-protest-for-end-to-police-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds in Farmington protest for end to police violence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:641cf7e8-857a-4c84-9f4d-4f57b4fb00cb --><\/p>\n<p>FARMINGTON \u2013 \u201cI can\u2019t breathe,\u201d yelled a crowd of more than 400 people in Farmington on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice for George Floyd protest brought out hundreds of people along Main Street in front of the Animas Valley Mall to advocate for people of color and protest police violence after the officer-involved death of an unarmed black man in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>George Floyd, a 46, died on March 25 after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for several minutes while he was handcuffed. Floyd, who did not appear to be resisting arrest, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Chauvin was fired, along with other officers involved in the incident, and he was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter May 29. Protests since the incident have spread throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=a9af6c14-8265-4208-8d89-5f0977572a63&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Protesters in Farmington chanted &amp;#x201c;Say his name,&amp;#x201d; and &amp;#x201c;George Floyd&amp;#x201d; during the Justice for George Floyd protest.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Protesters in Farmington chanted &amp;#x201c;Say his name,&amp;#x201d; and &amp;#x201c;George Floyd&amp;#x201d; during the Justice for George Floyd protest.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Liz Weber\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Monday\u2019s protest was announced on Facebook by the San Juan College Young Democratic Socialists of America but organized by a group of women of color who did not want their names shared, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/690191111550156\/?active_tab=discussion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event description<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An organizer, who spoke to <em>The Durango Herald <\/em>during the protest but asked that her name not be published, said, \u201cI am an African American woman. This is life or death for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said there was a smaller protest on Saturday \u2013 about 10 people \u2013 but she partnered with local organizations to spread the word about Monday\u2019s protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nervous, but I have faith and trust in my community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Clarrissa Ribera, who has lived in Farmington for the past 10 years, said some residents are proud of their racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re out here,\u201d Ribera said. \u201cIt\u2019s scary to know the people around you are secretly racist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6af2f161-fb72-472e-90d2-3475269d0077&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Protesters in Farmington chanted &amp;#x201c;Say his name,&amp;#x201d; and &amp;#x201c;George Floyd&amp;#x201d; during the Justice for George Floyd protest.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Protesters in Farmington chanted &amp;#x201c;Say his name,&amp;#x201d; and &amp;#x201c;George Floyd&amp;#x201d; during the Justice for George Floyd protest.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Liz Weber\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Most protesters wore masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Of the 12 people interviewed during the event, protesters said they came out to protest systemic racism, police brutality, to remember those killed in police custody, to demand justice for Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>Alyanna Ayala, who attended with a group of friends, said she wanted justice for Floyd and every person that\u2019s been killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll lives don\u2019t matter until black lives matter,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement officers nationwide have condemned the death of Floyd and the officer\u2019s use of force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we as law enforcement leaders cannot plainly condemn this kind of event, we are failing our profession, our officers and our communities,\u201d Farmington Police Chief Steven Hebbe said on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The protest Monday was also attended by San Juan County Sheriff Shane Ferrari, along with city and state officers. Black Americans are also twice as likely to be shot and killed by police as white Americans, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.axios.com\/click\/20482954.29301\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2FzaGluZ3RvbnBvc3QuY29tL2dyYXBoaWNzL2ludmVzdGlnYXRpb25zL3BvbGljZS1zaG9vdGluZ3MtZGF0YWJhc2UvP3V0bV9zb3VyY2U9bmV3c2xldHRlciZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj1uZXdzbGV0dGVyX2F4aW9zYW0mc3RyZWFtPXRvcA\/5b5fb277f543e67a4f5b6769B24ce190c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post database<\/a> of police-involved shootings. <a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2019\/03\/15\/black-americans-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One study found<\/a> 63% of black Americans worried about police using deadly force on them or a family member, compared with 21% of white Americans who said they feared the use of police force. The same study found 78% of black Americans saw the deaths of African Americans during encounters with the police as a broader problem.<\/p>\n<p>One protester, who only wanted to be known as Sam, said, \u201cThere are too many people dying from systemic racism. We\u2019re tired of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the protest, organizers encouraged people not to be antagonize by people driving by or a small crowd of people that had gathered to watch the protest in the parking lot.
