{"id":52584,"date":"2020-07-22T19:30:11","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T01:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/no-derby-or-carnivals-but-la-plata-county-fair-will-offer-what-it-can\/"},"modified":"2020-07-23T01:30:11","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T01:30:11","slug":"no-derby-or-carnivals-but-la-plata-county-fair-will-offer-what-it-can","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/no-derby-or-carnivals-but-la-plata-county-fair-will-offer-what-it-can\/","title":{"rendered":"No derby or carnivals, but La Plata County Fair will offer what it can"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=c4b0433f-c273-429f-a7d5-896fb31bfc6e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1542\" height=\"1025\" alt=\"The La Plata County Fair has canceled most events because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, but it will still go on with 4-H and FFA shows that will be livestreamed on the internet.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The La Plata County Fair has canceled most events because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, but it will still go on with 4-H and FFA shows that will be livestreamed on the internet.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>There won\u2019t be any carnivals or rodeos this summer, but the La Plata County Fair is offering what it can given state health restrictions in place to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a weird year, for sure,\u201d said Angela Fountain with the Colorado State University Extension Office. \u201cBut I am so thankful we\u2019re able to do what we are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Event organizers in April started discussing if the La Plata County Fair would have to be canceled, as so many other similar events across the country have, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>While most popular events, like the carnival, rodeo, dance and demolition derby were canceled, Fountain said organizers were able to come up with a way to at least offer some events for the public, albeit in the virtual realm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe canceled all events except the 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) shows,\u201d she said. \u201cBut because we\u2019re so limited on group size, we\u2019re encouraging the public to not come to the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fountain said throughout the week, most of the 4-H and FFA events \u2013 where young farmers show off livestock they\u2019ve raised throughout the year \u2013 will be livestreamed and available for viewing on the internet. The events will be livestreamed on the La Plata County Fair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/La-Plata-County-Fair-133672547226344\/posts\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event will kick off Monday, Aug. 3, with poultry; Tuesday with goats; Wednesday with sheep; Thursday with beef; and Friday with swine.<\/p>\n<p>Fountain said about 215 young farmers have signed up for the events. She said social distancing and other best health practices will be in place throughout the week for safety.<\/p>\n<p>Other non-animal projects, like cake decorating and woodworking contests, will be posted on the 4-H website, Fountain said.<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 8, the livestock auction, where young farmers sell their animals, will be held.
