Mitsch Bush has accepted, but Boebert has yet to confirm participation.<\/p>\n<p>Club 20, an organization of communities, businesses, individuals and associations across Western Colorado that aims to speak with a unified voice on issues affecting the Western Slope, hosts a debate each year for Colorado voters.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=838d7833-e2e4-4044-992a-98f78494fa7f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1870\" height=\"1787\" alt=\"Mitsch Bush\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Mitsch Bush<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Mitsch Bush, a Steamboat Springs Democrat, previously said she could not attend the in-person debate because of concerns about COVID-19, so Boebert, a Republican from Rifle, withdrew from the debate, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s fascinating to me about this election cycle is that the candidates are unwilling to engage in civil discourse,\u201d Christian Reece, business and civic coalitions executive director for Club 20, said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Pueblo Chieftain <\/em>plans to sponsor a debate between Mitsch Bush and Boebert in early October, but a date has not been confirmed. Boebert initially accepted the invitation, but has since declined.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Cade, communications director for Mitsch Bush\u2019s campaign, said the campaign has invited Boebert to debate on a different date.<\/p>\n<p>But Laura Carno, communications director for Boebert, said, \u201cWe\u2019ve moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=d0952deb-e7e4-4e03-899b-8c7c09ce965a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"625\" height=\"625\" alt=\"Boebert\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Boebert<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Boebert will continue with campaigning, Carno said, adding, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to chase them down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did the right thing in the beginning and said \u2018yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Boebert campaign says Mitsch Bush refused to attend the <em>Chieftain<\/em> debate, but Cade said this is not the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to have a debate,\u201d Cade said. Mitsch Bush hopes to discuss health care, public lands and jobs in a debate setting with Boebert, the communications director said.<\/p>\n<p>Mitsch Bush is \u201ccertainly open to having a debate,\u201d Cade said.<\/p>\n<p>For Reece, the \u201chide-and-seek\u201d is unfortunate. \u201cVoters deserve to hear policy-based conversations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Club 20 debate allows voters in Western Colorado to submit policy questions and hear unscripted answers, Carno said, because questions are not shared with participants beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am the only one that sees the questions,\u201d Reece said. But without debates, voters only get snippets of prerecorded campaign ads.<\/p>\n<p>The Club 20 debate also allows candidates to question their opponent, \u201cmore of a fact-finding mission\u201d than what is revealed through rallies and campaign ads, Reece said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere seems to be concerns from campaigns that the candidate will say something to give another candidate ammunition\u201d during a debate, Reece said. \u201cBut it is disrespectful to voters to not engage properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen Sheek with the Montezuma County League of Women Voters said local chapters hope Boebert decides to participate in their forum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe value and promote providing voters with the information they need to make an informed choice,\u201d Sheek said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much disinformation out there, and candidates\u2019 views are often skewed by the opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A debate stage is a place to present positions that can be challenged and improved, Sheek said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Upcoming candidate events<\/div>\n<p>In the meantime, Boebert plans to visit supporters. Mitsch Bush plans several virtual town hall meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Boebert plans to travel to Grand Junction and Montrose on Sept. 7 to raise money, to visit the Remembering Our Fallen memorial traveling through Grand Junction and to speak at the Elks Lodge in Montrose, Carno said.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 15, the restaurant owner will be in Durango to speak at the Southwest Republican Women\u2019s lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Carno said Mitsch Bush\u2019s events are virtual because she doesn\u2019t want to be out in public.
