She was the only employee based in Mancos, so the quarterly magazine decided to move its office building closer to the office manager, ad coordinator and subscription manager, Marvene Tom (Din\u00e9), who lives outside Durango.<\/p>\n<p>The editor, Bradley Shreve, is based in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>The Tribal College Journal office first moved from Maryland to Mancos in 1997, but it has occupied the house at 130 East Montezuma St. for about 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The new office address in Durango is 679E. Second Ave., Condominium Suite E-1, Office No. 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are an American Indian-owned publication, so it is good to be in Indian Country in the traditional homeland of the Navajo,\u201d Shreve said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern Ute Indian Tribe, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and the land of the ancestral Puebloans at Mesa Verde are nearby, Shreve said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=a3003c53-c409-4bf2-b8a1-821dd0f9e647&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"The Tribal College Journal&amp;#x2019;s new office in downtown Durango.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The Tribal College Journal&amp;#x2019;s new office in downtown Durango.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Bradley Shreve<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Din\u00e9 College in Arizona and the Navajo Technical University, the Institute of American Indian Arts and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in New Mexico are within driving distance of the Tribal College Journal office in Southwest Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>The publication has had interns from Fort Lewis College in the past, but Shreve said he was not sure that would continue when the office moved to Durango.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tribalcollegejournal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribal College Journal<\/a> focuses on American Indian higher education and issues American Indians face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNative students have a much higher success rate in tribally controlled institutions\u201d that offer a \u201cculturally grounded curriculum,\u201d Shreve said.<\/p>\n<p>Many Native American students leave tribal communities to go to institutions far from home.
