{"id":50839,"date":"2020-10-23T00:06:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T06:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/update-man-seriously-injured-in-crash-on-u-s-highway-491\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:53:20","slug":"update-man-seriously-injured-in-crash-on-u-s-highway-491","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/update-man-seriously-injured-in-crash-on-u-s-highway-491\/","title":{"rendered":"Update: Man seriously injured in crash on U.S. Highway 491"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:e66d045c-1e36-40f9-8dd5-f997da7d9baf --><\/p>\n<p>A New Mexico man was in Southwest Memorial Hospital with serious injuries Thursday night after driving off of U.S. Highway 491 just west of Cortez near the IFA Country store.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Benally, 45, of Shiprock, jumped the curb of U.S. 491 in his Ford F-550 and drove into a ditch, hitting a rock, a speed limit sign and a highway sign, according to three witnesses, said Colorado State Trooper Tonja Cowan.<\/p>\n<p>The three witnesses were driving on the highway at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Benally\u2019s injuries included several broken bones, Cowan said.<\/p>\n<p>The front axle of the truck tore off in the crash, the state trooper said. The truck had New Mexico license plates.<\/p>\n<p>Officials do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved, but they were unsure what caused Benally to drive off of the road, Cowan said.
