{"id":50790,"date":"2020-10-25T05:20:48","date_gmt":"2020-10-25T11:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/rocky-mountain-black-conservatives-founder-speaks-in-dolores\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:53:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:53:14","slug":"rocky-mountain-black-conservatives-founder-speaks-in-dolores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/rocky-mountain-black-conservatives-founder-speaks-in-dolores\/","title":{"rendered":"Rocky Mountain Black Conservatives founder speaks in Dolores"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:da7a5c17-328d-4f6f-967a-96e1cb6b8e43 --><\/p>\n<p>The head of the Rocky Mountain Black Conservatives spoke at a private outdoor fundraiser for Republican candidates in Dolores Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Derrick Wilburn, founder and executive director of the Rocky Mountain Black Conservatives, also rode with the Montezuma County Patriots\u2019 Freedom Ride on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>His organization aims to \u201cbridge the gap that exists between conservative political causes, parties and candidates, and ethnic minorities in the USA,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RMBTP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republican candidate for U.S. House Lauren Boebert, <a href=\"https:\/\/cologop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Republican Party<\/a> Chairman Rep. Ken Buck, R-Windsor, and Montezuma County commissioner candidate Joel Stevenson also spoke with voters at the private outdoor event, hosted by vice chairman of the Montezuma County Republicans, Casey McClellan.<\/p>\n<p>Wilburn describes himself as an \u201caccidental political activist,\u201d and said he has been conservative for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does color of skin have to do with it?\u201d he said to the audience at the fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p>Wilburn is also the driving force behind <a href=\"https:\/\/poccinterns.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">POC Capitol Interns<\/a>, which sends Black college students to live in Washington, D.C., and work for Republican candidates.<\/p>\n<p>In his keynote address, Wilburn said that systemic racism exists, but at the local level \u2013 not at the federal level.<\/p>\n<p>Police officers work for their chief, and the chief of police works for the mayor, Wilburn said. And the places where riots have occurred \u2013 such as Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland, \u2013 have majority Democrats in office and Democratic governors.<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged fundraiser attendees to reelect President Donald Trump to ensure a \u201cconservative counterbalance\u201d to what is happening at the local level.<\/p>\n<p>Wilburn also addressed the use of Confederate flags and the recent push to remove Confederate statues and monuments, heightened by the protests that occurred after the death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a fan of the Confederate flag, so I don\u2019t have one,\u201d Wilburn said, but \u201cI will not demand that you take your flag down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the idea that something should be banned because someone does not \u201clike it, want it, believe it or is offended by it\u201d is not right.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=74c9e7a9-a2e6-418a-8119-c19a71759c78&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Republican candidate for U.S. House Lauren Boebert makes a campaign stop at a Montezuma County Republicans fundraiser in Dolores Saturday evening.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Republican candidate for U.S. House Lauren Boebert makes a campaign stop at a Montezuma County Republicans fundraiser in Dolores Saturday evening.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Emily Hayes\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=0cd35d05-f52e-4e63-b2f7-51db43fe34ee&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, R-Windsor, speaks in support of the Republican side of the ballot at a Montezuma County Republicans fundraiser in Dolores less than two weeks before the general election.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Emily Hayes\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Campaign stop for Boebert<\/div>\n<p>Buck made several campaign stops with Boebert as she made her rounds in Southwest Colorado, stopping in Montezuma County to speak with voters in person again before Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see so much patriotism and passion in Montezuma County,\u201d Boebert said. \u201cIt should be like this everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boebert encouraged attendees to vote against Colorado Proposition 113, which would give Colorado nine electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote if states representing at least 270 Electoral College votes adopt the plan.
