Democrat Joe Biden cruised to victory Tuesday night in Colorado, taking the state\u2019s nine electoral votes in a contest that was never in doubt.<\/p>\n
The former vice president\u2019s victory over President Donald Trump became clear soon after polls closed, and five major TV networks declared Biden the winner in Colorado by 7:30 p.m. The Associated Press followed minutes later.<\/p>\n
The polling ahead of the election and early results suggest Biden is potentially headed toward a historic margin of victory in Colorado. Biden stood at 56.19% and Trump at 41.50%, according to preliminary vote totals with less 60% of the state reporting.<\/p>\n
In Montezuma County, Trump was ahead 57.14% to 41.29% with 61% of the county reporting.<\/p>\n
In 2008, when Biden appeared on the ballot with Barack Obama for the first time, the Democratic ticket won by 9 percentage points.<\/p>\n
Colorado U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat, said the stakes of the election were significant as he encouraged people to vote on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cColorado can be that place that 50 years from now, people point back and say, \u2018It was Colorado in 2020 that led the entire country (in turnout) and turned the page on Trumpism and ignited a new progessive era for America,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThat is what I think is on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n
The presidential race helped drive turnout in Colorado to new levels, exceeding 3 million votes for the first time in the growing state.<\/p>\n
The big win came despite Biden\u2019s modest campaign in Colorado \u2013 which for the first time in recent memory didn\u2019t rank as a battleground state.<\/p>\n
Biden attended a private Denver fundraiser in February but never held a public campaign event in Colorado \u2013 the first presidential candidate in more than two decades to skip the state. And his campaign team pulled its local television advertising in October when the result looked secure.<\/p>\n
Trump held a campaign rally the same month in Colorado Springs but never returned \u2013 a stark contrast to the 2016 campaign when he held 10 rallies in six visits. That year, he lost Colorado to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by 4.9 percentage points.<\/p>\n
Colorado voters were split when Trump took office in 2017, according to The Colorado Sun\u2019s poll tracker, and his numbers only worsened over four years. A series of polls in October gave Biden an average lead of 13 percentage points in a head-to-head matchup, an improvement from earlier months.<\/p>\n
A massive voter outreach campaign coordinated by the Trump campaign and The Colorado Republican Party did little to change the game. The GOP says it made 9 million voter contacts and recruited thousands of volunteers. But Republicans were slow to vote, as Democrats dominated the early returns ahead of Election Day.<\/p>\n
Betsy Wilson, a 57-year-old from Aurora, is a registered Republican who waited to vote in-person on Election Day. She said she wouldn\u2019t have missed it. \u201cIt\u2019s the most important election of our lifetimes,\u201d said Wilson, who voted for Trump.<\/p>\n
Unlike Republicans who went door-to-door, Democrats and their allies largely kept their campaign in the virtual world, using digital advertising and text messaging to turn out voters.<\/p>\n
Democratic voters were driven by their dislike of Trump as much \u2013 if not more \u2013 than support for Biden.<\/p>\n
Cecile Richard didn\u2019t vote in 2016, but picked Democrats at the top of the ticket as she voted in Denver. \u201cI don\u2019t like Trump,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
On why she decided to vote this time around, she said: \u201cIt\u2019s obvious \u2013 because of the last four years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sterling Cook, a 33-year-old Democrat, cast his ballot at Corona Presbyterian Church in Denver on Tuesday. He said he voted for Biden in the presidential race but \u201cit was the third hardest vote I\u2019ve ever taken.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said he thinks Biden is too conservative and that he supported Democratic U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders in the presidential primaries earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Even though the race in Colorado wasn\u2019t close, the anxiety surrounding the presidential contest nationwide was evident at the polls on Election Day.<\/p>\n
Kerri Morgan, 43, who voted at a polling center in southeast Aurora, said she\u2019s optimistic that Biden will lead a blue wave in Colorado. But she\u2019s still nervous for how results in other swing states may pan out.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy hope is Biden gets big wins,\u201d she said. \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of anxiety going around.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the West, Biden on Tuesday night won California, Oregon and Washington state, while Trump won Idaho.<\/p>\n
California, Oregon and Washington are all liberal states, while Idaho is conservative.<\/p>\n
California has 55 electoral votes, the biggest haul of any state. It\u2019s also the home of Biden\u2019s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n
But Trump and Biden were locked in tight races in battleground states across the country as they concluded an epic campaign<\/p>\n
From coast to coast, races were too early to call in the most fiercely contested states on the map, including Florida, North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania. Both candidate each picked up some predictable victories, with Trump taking states including Kansas and North Dakota and Biden\u2019s haul including Colorado and Virginia, two former battlegrounds that have become Democratic strongholds.<\/p>\n
Millions of voters put aside worries about the virus \u2013 and some long lines \u2013 to turn out in person, joining 102 million fellow Americans who voted days or weeks earlier, a record number that represented 73% of the total vote in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n
