{"id":50071,"date":"2020-12-03T17:51:42","date_gmt":"2020-12-04T00:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/chevel-shepherd-brings-circus-to-town\/"},"modified":"2020-12-04T00:51:42","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T00:51:42","slug":"chevel-shepherd-brings-circus-to-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/chevel-shepherd-brings-circus-to-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Chevel Shepherd brings \u2018circus\u2019 to town"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=a61ebdf9-0f0c-49c5-8800-b0713248707d&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" alt=\"Country music singer Chevel Shepherd filmed her latest video \u201cJust Like the Circus\u201d in Durango.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Country music singer Chevel Shepherd filmed her latest video \u201cJust Like the Circus\u201d in Durango.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Chevel Shepherd brought the circus to town.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of Season 15 of the television singing competition \u201cThe Voice,\u201d and Farmington resident, was in Durango along with cast and crew, including Durangoans, to film the video for her single, \u201cJust Like the Circus,\u201d which was released last month.<\/p>\n<p>The video was directed by Durangoan David Dibble and features the Durango &amp; Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Durango Arts Center theater.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda Macon, executive director of DAC, said the center intentionally set up the timing of the shoot so it would be done when most of its staff was out of the building, to minimize unnecessary points of contact between people.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-youtube naviga-video-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S5wkRPrX_uo\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDavid Dibble is a friend and associate who needed a safe space to record a music video while our theater was closed due to COVID-19,\u201d she said. \u201cHe and his crew left \u2018no trace\u2019 after the three day shoot, even though they brought in straw and turned the stage into a proper three-ring circus! We had fun helping him \u2013 we sorted through props together and created the knife-throwing wheel that Chevel spins on in the video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust Like the Circus,\u201d written by Kacey Musgraves, Ashley Arrison and Shane McAnally, is set at an old-timey circus, which fits with the old-timey, classic country sound of the song.<\/p>\n<p>And right down to her voice and costumes, Shepherd comes across as an old soul, something she\u2019s heard before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been told that so many times. And I love it because I am,\u201d she said, adding that when she was initially sent the song along with \u201cEverybody\u2019s Got a Story,\u201d she fell in love with it and its story.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=94aa0440-48d8-4ba9-aa24-3dc48593e932&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Country music singer Chevel Shepherd filmed her latest video &amp;#x201c;Just Like the Circus&amp;#x201d; in Durango.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Country music singer Chevel Shepherd filmed her latest video &amp;#x201c;Just Like the Circus&amp;#x201d; in Durango.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cI think storytelling is really important to music because a lot of people can relate to what you\u2019re singing about, so I always try to put myself in the story of the song,\u201d Shepherd said. \u201cI just fell in love with all the creative aspects of the song and what I could do with them to make it my own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as a New Mexico native, Shepherd said she was happy to have the video made locally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to do it local because the Four Corners has done so much for me,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I like to stick around here because I love the people here, and it was just so much fun.
