{"id":50057,"date":"2020-12-04T22:22:50","date_gmt":"2020-12-05T05:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/montezuma-county-deputies-search-haycamp-mesa-arrest-man-sought-in-collision\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:50:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:50:00","slug":"montezuma-county-deputies-search-haycamp-mesa-arrest-man-sought-in-collision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/montezuma-county-deputies-search-haycamp-mesa-arrest-man-sought-in-collision\/","title":{"rendered":"Montezuma County deputies search Haycamp Mesa, arrest man sought in collision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=3d149537-4317-4d45-968b-95c13a84f65f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"656\" height=\"647\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A Montezuma County investigation and search for a man suspected of forcing a female driver off the road led to an arrest Nov. 30 on Haycamp Mesa, said Sheriff Steve Nowlin.<\/p>\n<p>John Austin Fusco, 37, was arrested on a probation violation and is suspected of attempted second-degree kidnapping, menacing, reckless driving and a traffic violation, according to arrest warrant affidavits.<\/p>\n<p>Fusco, of Montrose, is in custody at the Montezuma County Detention Center.<\/p>\n<p>A court hearing for formal charges by the 22nd Judicial District Attorney\u2019s office is set for Dec. 17.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nowlin and arrest affidavits, a driver on Forest Road 556 (Haycamp Mesa) called 911 the afternoon of Nov. 25 to report she was harassed and aggressively followed by a white man in a black truck who struck her vehicle from behind and caused her to crash into an embankment.<\/p>\n<p>The man approached by foot to her vehicle window and allegedly attempted to break in, but she drove away, Nowlin said. She was not injured.<\/p>\n<p>Several deputies and a Colorado Parks and Wildlife official conducted a \u201cmethodical search\u201d of Haycamp Mesa roads, San Juan National Forest land and private land in the area for the suspect and black truck.<\/p>\n<p>During the investigation, loggers in the Haycamp area reported seeing a man and truck that fit the description in the area, and a witness cutting firewood reported seeing it on nearby private property.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies then found a black pickup owned by Fusco with damage that was consistent with the alleged collision on the Haycamp Road, Nowlin said.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies arrested Fusco for allegedly violating a bond condition that prohibited him from carrying a knife.
