{"id":49662,"date":"2020-12-28T02:19:35","date_gmt":"2020-12-28T09:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/traditional-meal-handed-out-on-christmas-day\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:48:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:48:13","slug":"traditional-meal-handed-out-on-christmas-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/traditional-meal-handed-out-on-christmas-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Traditional meal handed out on Christmas day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:6d3d1838-94ab-42d8-9e81-b22fec6cd54f --><\/p>\n<p>Hope\u2019s Kitchen handed out traditional holiday meals on Christmas Day in Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>The soup kitchen is part of First United Methodist Church, and its staff and volunteers regularly provide free meals three times per week for people in the community.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the traditional sit-down community Christmas dinner had to be canceled because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>But Hope\u2019s Kitchen stepped up to provide to-go meals specifically for families in need. Meals were not available to the broader public.<\/p>\n<p>When Christmas fell on a Friday, \u201cour 12 volunteers said \u2018we normally serve that day anyway, so we\u2019ll be here,\u2019\u201d said Jean Schwien, pastor for First United Methodist.<\/p>\n<p>Clients to receive meals were identified from social services, Grace\u2019s Kitchen, Hope\u2019s Kitchen, Good Samaritan Center and The Bridge Shelter, among other agencies. Hope\u2019s was prepared to hand out 250 meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did not serve as many as expected, but all were grateful for the meal,\u201d Schwien said.<\/p>\n<p>The menu includes baked ham and all the sides, plus dessert and a candy cane.<\/p>\n<p>The Cortez Walmart is provided half-price discounts on food items needed to cook up the holiday meal.
