{"id":48513,"date":"2021-02-17T17:02:30","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T00:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/shiprock-man-sentenced-for-assault-on-law-enforcement-officer\/"},"modified":"2021-02-18T00:02:30","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T00:02:30","slug":"shiprock-man-sentenced-for-assault-on-law-enforcement-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/shiprock-man-sentenced-for-assault-on-law-enforcement-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Shiprock man sentenced for assault on law enforcement officer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=c93c9a9a-1dd6-4b64-ae66-ee2718b486b6&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1200\" height=\"783\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>FARMINGTON \u2013 A 33-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison for assaulting a law enforcement officer.<\/p>\n<p>According to U.S. Department of Justice court records, on Jan. 22, 2020, Derrick Begay of Shiprock, New Mexico, was in his truck parked in the middle of a service road, blocking it and slumped over the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>The criminal complaint says two officers arrived at the scene and \u201csmelled the odor of marijuana\u201d coming from the truck.<\/p>\n<p>One officer tried to awaken Begay, and after several attempts, including opening Begay\u2019s door to touch his shoulder to wake him up, \u201cBegay eventually woke up and appeared to be intoxicated as his speech was slurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The complaint said Begay was dazed and confused and didn\u2019t know where he was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agent lawfully requested that Begay exit his vehicle, but Begay did not comply,\u201d the department\u2019s news release said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the criminal complaint, at one point when asked to get out of the vehicle, Begay said, \u201cAnything can be taken care of with money.\u201d When asked if he was attempting to bribe officers, he said no, but that, again, \u201canything can be solved with money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officers attempted to get Begay out of the truck, but after no success, Begay swung and hit one of the officers in the face, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Officers backed off, with the hit officer holding his firearm demanding Begay exit the vehicle. Begay instead started his truck and led the officers on a pursuit on the Navajo Nation, according to the criminal complaint. Begay hit speeds in excess of 100 mph.
