{"id":47986,"date":"2021-03-14T00:35:09","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T07:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/shs-team-moves-back-into-new-family-birthing-center\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:41:10","slug":"shs-team-moves-back-into-new-family-birthing-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/shs-team-moves-back-into-new-family-birthing-center\/","title":{"rendered":"SHS team moves back into new Family Birthing Center"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=71ba8c25-0097-4855-ab36-373bb75b87d4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"833\" height=\"556\" alt=\"Southwest Memorial Hospital\u2019s Family Birthing Center is back in its permanent unit.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Southwest Memorial Hospital\u2019s Family Birthing Center is back in its permanent unit.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Southwest Health System<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Citing progress against the coronavirus, Southwest Memorial Hospital has announced that its Family Birthing Center returned to its permanent location in the inpatient wing this month.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bridgett Jabour, SHS executive assistant, the hospital moved to its old unit last year to keep parents and newborns separate from COVID patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf nothing else, it made people feel more comfortable that what was happening was separated from the mom, baby and family,\u201d Jabour said.<\/p>\n<p>The new unit, built in 2018, is larger, with a homelike atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The suites have birthing beds, equipment for newborn care, a rocking chair and a labor tub.<\/p>\n<p>Being a small hospital also allowed the staff to adapt to changing virus conditions quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it\u2019s challenging to be a small, independent hospital, we were able to move faster and better than a lot of large facilities would be able to,\u201d Jabour said.<\/p>\n<p>Southwest Memorial Hospital recorded 150 births in 2020, up from 137 births in 2019. SHS estimates that it will have 154 births this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Family Birthing Center is open 24 hours a day.
