{"id":47370,"date":"2021-04-15T18:32:13","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T00:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/man-sentenced-to-15-years-for-killing-aunt\/"},"modified":"2021-04-16T00:32:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T00:32:13","slug":"man-sentenced-to-15-years-for-killing-aunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/man-sentenced-to-15-years-for-killing-aunt\/","title":{"rendered":"Man sentenced to 15 years for killing aunt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=cd51a2ca-ba6d-4fa8-9ee2-db8578723253&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1200\" height=\"783\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>FARMINGTON \u2013 A Shiprock man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his aunt.<\/p>\n<p>Tavor Tom, 20, pleaded guilty Nov. 24, 2020, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint and news release, on July 1, 2019, Tom went to his aunt\u2019s residence in Shiprock where he slit her throat before he stabbed her seven to eight times to death. Tom stole his aunt\u2019s vehicle and then drove to Walmart in Farmington and stole the cough suppressant Mucinex.<\/p>\n<p>According to the criminal complaint, Tom had struggled with an addiction to Mucinex for several years and had been suicidal and increasingly violent.<\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint, Tom took back roads to Aztec and crashed into a fence by a church while under the influence of the cough suppressant.
