New Mexico surpassed 4,000 COVID-related deaths.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Adobe Stock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>FARMINGTON \u2013 The New Mexico Department of Health announced a \u201csad milestone\u201d during the COVID-19 pandemic \u2013 the state officially surpassed 4,000 COVID-related deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In a news release sent Thursday, Department of Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins said the milestone should remind New Mexicans of all that people have endured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just another number \u2013 they are our neighbors, our fellow New Mexicans,\u201d Collins said. \u201cWe grieve for them and their families. It also underscores the need for us to remain cautious in the weeks and months ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collins added that even though New Mexico is \u201cleading the nation\u201d in vaccinations and distributions and sticking with COVID-safe practices, \u201cwe are not out of the woods yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still much work still to be done,\u201d Collins said. \u201cWe need to remain vigilant if we are going to beat COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brad Greenberg with the San Juan Regional Medical Center said in an email Monday that it is important to go back to COVID-safe practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor over a year, our entire Four Corners community has navigated the unforeseen impacts of the pandemic, and has persevered through unprecedented challenges.
