{"id":47285,"date":"2021-04-20T16:52:32","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T22:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/judge-rules-for-news-organizations-in-public-records-lawsuit\/"},"modified":"2021-04-20T22:52:32","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T22:52:32","slug":"judge-rules-for-news-organizations-in-public-records-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/judge-rules-for-news-organizations-in-public-records-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge rules for news organizations in public records lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>District Judge Nancy Franchini also ruled Monday that the two news organizations are entitled to reasonable attorney fees and legal costs, the<em> Journal<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Franchini awarded the <em>Journal <\/em>$293,625 and KOB $118,000 in their lawsuit over documents related to former Superintendent Winston Brooks\u2019 departure.<\/p>\n<p>Albuquerque Public Schools spokeswoman Monica Armenta said the district will appeal the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAPS works diligently to be transparent in responding to all records requests, and this matter was no different,\u201d Armenta said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Journal<\/em> Editor Karen Moses called the ruling a \u201cclear message of the importance of public bodies following the Inspection of Public Records Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, she said the <em>Journal<\/em> intended to appeal Franchini\u2019s ruling that an investigative report didn\u2019t have to be released.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Donaldson, vice president and general manager of KOB-TV, stressed that public records laws are there to \u201censure transparency and accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA school district cannot pick and choose when to obey the law, especially when it\u2019s writing six-figure checks to outgoing personnel,\u201d Donaldson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>District Judge Nancy Franchini also ruled Monday that the two news organizations are entitled to reasonable attorney fees and legal costs, the Journal reported.
