{"id":47275,"date":"2021-04-16T18:01:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T00:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/secret-prom-puts-las-cruces-school-back-on-remote-learning\/"},"modified":"2021-04-17T00:01:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-17T00:01:58","slug":"secret-prom-puts-las-cruces-school-back-on-remote-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/secret-prom-puts-las-cruces-school-back-on-remote-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Secret prom\u2019 puts Las Cruces school back on remote learning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A complaint submitted to the state governor\u2019s office said hundreds of Mayfield High School students may have attended the event held April 10, according to a Las Cruces Public Schools statement released Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>While the so-called secret prom is investigated, Mayfield will remain on remote learning through April 26 to prevent potential spread of COVID-19, the district\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Students who attended could face repercussions ranging from academic suspensions to being barred from school events such as graduation, district spokeswoman Kelly Jameson told the Las Cruces Sun-News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that \u2026 students have certainly missed out on an awful lot this last year,\u201d Jameson said. \u201cBut anything that threatens their own safety and welfare is something that could potentially impact others, and the district sees that as irresponsible at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Josh Ziehl of Owl Cartel Event Productions told the <em>Sun-News<\/em> that he was hired as DJ for the event. He estimated that between 100 and 150 students attended.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees wore masks but many did not keep them on the whole time, said Ziehl, who said he wore his throughout.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 adults supervised the event, \u201ctrying to keep \u2026 social distancing as best as they could,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Sun-News <\/em>reported that it was unable to confirm the location.<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico\u2019s public health emergency guidelines restrict large gatherings. In Do\u00f1a Ana County, which includes Las Cruces, the limit is 10 people.<\/p>\n<p>LCPS interim Superintendent Ralph Ramos said the \u201calleged incident\u201d contradicts efforts the district has taken to ensure safety among school populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViolating the order against mass gatherings is a disappointing disruption to those efforts,\u201d Ramos said in the district\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mayfield High School Principal Eric Fraass said he learned of the event the next morning after being forwarded photos from social media posts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome teachers are disappointed that kids, in their opinion, were being irresponsible,\u201d Fraass said.<\/p>\n<p>Ziehl, the DJ, said he was pleased to see the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, the kids had such a good time, you could just tell,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A complaint submitted to the state governor\u2019s office said hundreds of Mayfield High School students may have attended the event held April 10, according to a Las Cruces Public Schools statement released Thursday.
