(Anthony Nicotera\/The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Family and friends filled the soccer field on the Southwest Open School campus Wednesday evening to celebrate 11 students who persevered through the coronavirus pandemic to receive their diplomas.<\/p>\n<p>After a welcome from the school\u2019s director, Casey Sampson, the audience was treated to a traditional tribal honor song by Mark Wing and the Red Sky Group.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=59172c56-5e8d-5d85-abfe-56172f56345c&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Mark Wing and the Red Sky Group performed an honor song at the Southwest Open School graduation ceremony. (Anthony Nicotera\/ The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Graduate Leila Watkins then took to the podium to discuss how SWOS enabled her to be herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had this mindset that I had to conform to what others thought of me and what they wanted me to be. SWOS was a turning point for this mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watkins graduated a year early.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSWOS helped me do that,\u201d Watkins said. And they\u2019ve been by my side the whole way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony\u2019s guest speaker was 2004 alumnus Michele Kardokus.<\/p>\n<p>Kardokus emphasized the confidence and self-awareness she gained during her time at SWOS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSWOS gave me the foundation to recognize it is not your privilege, nor your disadvantage, that dictates the outcome of your life, but it is your belief,\u201d Kardokus said.<\/p>\n<p>She also encouraged students to give back to their community and hoped to see one of them become a guest speaker for another generation\u2019s graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate Paiten Greer, in her class farewell speech, paid a tribute to each of her teachers and discussed the uniqueness of SWOS.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=0a3a798d-1f70-51a8-8262-16d9822eb4f4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Graduate Paitan Greer gave a class farewell speech Wednesday evening. (Anthony Nicotera\/ The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cI felt a real sense of community and comfortable enough to be myself,\u201d Greer said.<\/p>\n<p>Sampson, the school\u2019s director, told <em id=\"emphasis-05b19841cef9a95ed43ae3e9b712b3a7\">The Journal<\/em> after the ceremony that COVID did pose a number of challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Schedules had to be reorganized so that students were in cohorts, when they would normally each have individualized pathways to graduation. This was done earlier in the pandemic in order to keep classes together so students would not be mixing throughout campus.<\/p>\n<p>Seating and other equipment was purchased to accommodate outdoor classes, and students adjusted to wearing masks.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from March to May of last year and a three-week stint after Thanksgiving, the school stayed mostly in-person during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9b015e18-f59c-5e77-81d4-df97457de782&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Southwest Open School Director Casey Sampson addresses graduates before they are presented with their diplomas. (Anthony Nicotera\/ The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Sampson did acknowledge potential learning loss during the remote learning periods. Schools officials saw a roughly 23% decline in credit-earning when learning was online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a higher risk of disengagement,\u201d Sampson said. \u201cWe definitely saw that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Sampson believes that SWOS\u2019 nontraditional style allowed students to bounce back quicker than usual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis group showed that they could exist in a world that was changed,\u201d Sampson said. \u201cThey were dynamic and flexible and mature.
