{"id":46162,"date":"2021-06-17T22:53:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T04:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-man-sentenced-for-drug-possession-with-intent-to-distribute\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:29:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:29:57","slug":"cortez-man-sentenced-for-drug-possession-with-intent-to-distribute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-man-sentenced-for-drug-possession-with-intent-to-distribute\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortez man sentenced for drug possession with intent to distribute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=e9979376-946f-5ebb-8d1a-f74954de5466&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"700\" height=\"380\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>A Cortez man was sentenced Thursday at the Montezuma County Combined Courts to six years in the Department of Corrections for heroin possession with intent to distribute.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Allen Gonzales, 24, was arrested Feb. 17 by the Montezuma-Cortez Narcotics Investigation Team at a Cortez car wash for a parole violation.<\/p>\n<p>During a search of Gonzales, officers discovered 21 grams of heroin.<\/p>\n<p>In an agreement with the 22nd Judicial District Attorney\u2019s Office, Gonzales pleaded guilty to drug possession with intent to distribute, a Class 3 felony. Prosecution recommended a jail sentence of four years. Law enforcement requested a longer jail sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Chief District Court Judge Doug Walker agreed with law enforcement officers and handed down a six-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Walker cited Gonzales\u2019 conviction on heroin possession with intent to distribute, his criminal history, and lack of commitment to previous drug treatment services, for the longer sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The testimony by friends and family make it \u201cclear Mr. Gonzales can be a good person,\u201d Walker said, adding that good decisions \u201chere on out\u201d will bring that person back.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Gonzales said he has made mistakes, and does not want \u201cto minimize the seriousness\u201d of the offense. He said medical treatment is helping with his addiction and he \u201cseeks recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor Galarza, a detective with the Montezuma-Cortez Narcotics Investigation Team, testified that the drug crime and Gonzales\u2019 criminal history warrant the maximum sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Galarza said the amount of heroin Gonzales possessed represented a risk to the community and is a \u201cpoison that destroys lives and families.\u201d He said drug distribution \u201cprofits from those addicted\u201d and that the 21 grams of heroin could have been distributed onto the street increasing the risk of overdoses.<\/p>\n<p>During the sentencing hearing, family and friends of Gonzales asked for leniency and drug treatment services.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzales\u2019 mother testified that her son has long struggled with drug addiction, and instead of prison, he needs long-term rehabilitation at an in-patient facility so he can learn the tools to \u201cstay straight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A friend testified to Gonzales\u2019 good and generous side, and the contrasting negative impacts of his drug addiction.
