(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Several of Dylan Redwine\u2019s friends testified Tuesday about his habit of quickly returning text messages, and their puzzlement that grew to concern and eventually to alarm after he suddenly stopped communicating the night on Nov. 18, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The testimony came during the second day of the trial of Dylan\u2019s father, Mark Redwine, who is charged with second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in Dylan\u2019s death while the boy was on a court-ordered 2012 Thanksgiving holiday visit to his father in Vallecito.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Nava, now 22, and one of Dylan\u2019s best friends in the Vallecito area, said Dylan initially wanted to stay overnight at his grandmother\u2019s house the night of the Nov. 18, the first night he arrived in Vallecito. Instead, when his father rejected the overnight stay, he planned to be at Nava\u2019s grandmother\u2019s house at 6:30 a.m. Nov. 19.<\/p>\n<p>Nava directed Dylan to come to the house through a sliding door that led to the room where he was sleeping, and Nava set his alarm to 6:30 a.m. \u2013 expecting to see Dylan when he awoke.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Nava went outside to look for Dylan, and when he didn\u2019t find him he texted him \u201cwhere are you\u201d expecting an immediate reply. He never got a return text.<\/p>\n<p>Nava followed up with further futile texts. He wanted to let Dylan know he would be at the home of another of their friends, Fernando Stubbs, during the day so he could join them later to \u201changout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But again, he heard no reply.<\/p>\n<p>Later, after Mark Redwine stopped by the Stubbs\u2019 house in search of Dylan, Nava said he grew increasingly concerned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDude, your dad\u2019s looking for you,\u201d he texted Dylan.<\/p>\n<p>When Dylan\u2019s mother, Elaine Hall, called Nava to see if Dylan had been with him, Nava said he grew further alarmed.<\/p>\n<p>His last futile text to Dylan, \u201cDude, you need to call someone as soon as possible. We\u2019re all worried about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-youtube naviga-video-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H5JIG-J480g\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nava\u2019s testimony was followed by three more childhood friends who gave varying descriptions of their 13-year-old friend: \u201chappy,\u201d \u201cfunny,\u201d \u201coutgoing,\u201d \u201ca prankster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hall, the boy\u2019s mother, has sat in the courtroom gallery for both days of the trial, surrounded by a half dozen or so friends.<\/p>\n<p>Television coverage of the trial has been light, a vast difference compared with the reporting about Dylan\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s disappearance and subsequent discovery of his death was the focus of national attention.<\/p>\n<p>Hall and Mark Redwine appeared on an episode of \u201cDr. Phil,\u201d a top daytime talk show hosted by Phil McGraw. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Nava downplayed reports that Dylan liked to hitchhike \u2013 saying the only time he knew of Dylan hitchhiking was during a cold snowy day when Dylan, Nava and another friend were caught walking wearing only light clothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started almost as a joke,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But the cold, wet boys managed to get a short ride to their friend\u2019s house. \u201cWe were surprised it worked,\u201d Nava said of their hitchhiking effort.<\/p>\n<p>Under questioning from Justin Bogan, one of Redwine\u2019s defense attorneys, Nava testified that his impression was that Dylan and his father were \u201cbest friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nava also said during a sleepover with Dylan at Redwine\u2019s house in late summer or early fall 2012, he got the impression Dylan was excited to go on a cross country trip with his dad to watch Major League Baseball games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a sports guy,\u201d Nava said. \u201cHe was going to see baseball. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">Watch live<\/h4>\n<p>The Mark Redwine trial can be viewed live online by visiting the Colorado Judicial Branch homepage at www.courts.state.co.us, going to \u201cFind a Court,\u201d selecting \u201cLa Plata,\u201d and joining WebEx for the appropriate date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cristen Baird, who lived across the street from Dylan when he moved with his mom to Colorado Springs, testified that Dylan and she were discussing if they should still consider each other a couple and stay together, because Dylan was planning to move again to go Monument.<\/p>\n<p>Like others, she said Dylan\u2019s habit was to return text messages virtually instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Baird took several photos of Dylan with his Colorado Springs friends Adam Harvey and Joseph Ceballos within days of his departure for Durango.<\/p>\n<p>The photos were placed in evidence by Michael Dougherty, special district attorney.
