{"id":45890,"date":"2021-07-08T00:06:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T06:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/woman-attacked-on-fourth-of-july-says-it-was-racially-motivated\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:28:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:28:13","slug":"woman-attacked-on-fourth-of-july-says-it-was-racially-motivated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/woman-attacked-on-fourth-of-july-says-it-was-racially-motivated\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman attacked on Fourth of July; says it was racially motivated"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=128787ad-3319-5157-b8e5-3ba8545f7917&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" alt=\"Blotter lights\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Blotter lights<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>FARMINGTON \u2013 Farmington police are investigating a possible \u201cracially motivated\u201d battery against a Native American woman on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A Facebook post by a Farmington resident who knows the victim said the woman was walking on Main Street when two men and a woman \u201cjumped\u201d the victim \u201csaying something about white supremacy and Happy Independence Day (expletive).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=16a75e09-70b2-571a-b253-b91811cf85f8&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"This Facebook post detailed what happened to the Native American woman and asks for the public\u2019s help in identifying those involved.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">This Facebook post detailed what happened to the Native American woman and asks for the public\u2019s help in identifying those involved.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Facebook screenshot<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Farmington Police Department spokeswoman Nicole Brown said three suspects got out of the car and started \u201cbattering\u201d the woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe expressed to the officer that she felt it was racially motivated because she is a Native American, and they said \u2018Happy Independence Day\u2019 to her as they battered her,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>Brown said the victim believes she lost consciousness, and the responding officer saw evidence of an assault on the woman\u2019s body and on the street where it occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take these kinds of cases very seriously,\u201d Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said. \u201cFPD detectives are fully investigating the incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the assault appears to be racially motivated, the police cannot declare it a hate crime.
