{"id":45691,"date":"2021-07-20T21:41:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-21T03:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/jury-trial-begins-for-man-suspected-of-causing-cyclists-death\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:26:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:26:37","slug":"jury-trial-begins-for-man-suspected-of-causing-cyclists-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/jury-trial-begins-for-man-suspected-of-causing-cyclists-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury trial begins for man suspected of causing cyclist\u2019s death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b2455a54-0af2-4486-9218-c9796b0dac78&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Schneider\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Schneider<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The quality of the investigation into the crash that led to the death of professional cyclist Benjamin Sonntag served as a focal point in opening statements Tuesday in the trial of the man charged with vehicular homicide in the cyclist\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Cordell James Schneider, 20, of La Plata County is charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving in Sonntag\u2019s death, which occurred shortly after noon on March, 4, 2020, while Sonntag was on a training ride on Cherry Creek Road (County Road 105).<\/p>\n<p>The Colorado State Patrol investigation concluded Schneider was traveling in his pickup at 69 mph on County Road 105, hitting Sonntag head-on after failing to negotiate a curve about seven-tenths of a mile north of the intersection with County Road 100.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Schneider, the defendant, was recklessly driving his truck at least 69 mph, a rate so fast that he simply could not control his truck, and he could not account for Mr. Sonntag, and at that rate of speed, he could not account for anything that appeared on the road,\u201d Assistant District Attorney David Ottman told jurors during opening statements.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=ab81f8ab-f026-4593-b346-4f075c914dcc&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Benjamin Sonntag, a professional cyclist who lived in Durango, was killed March 4, 2020,  while riding his bicycle in rural southwest La Plata County. (Courtesy of Bill Schieken)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Defense attorney Joel Fry said Schneider was on his way home after working an overnight shift at IronWood Mill, a plywood manufacturing lumber business in Dolores.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence in the trial will show the crash occurred after Schneider encountered Sonntag, who was riding in the wrong lane of traffic, Fry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was rounding a slight curve on County Road 105 when he encountered the bicyclist in his lane, riding toward him in the illegal lane of traffic,\u201d Fry said. \u201cThe bicyclist was not simply over the centerline. He was far into the left-hand lane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fry said Schneider tried to avoid Sonntag, but Sonntag mirrored his evasive movement and the two eventually collided.<\/p>\n<p>Fry said because law enforcement officers at the scene failed to close the road when the accident occurred, traffic continued, which damaged evidence.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4efe917f-b0e9-4100-887f-5f81954db471&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"950\" height=\"1425\" alt=\"The location on County Road 105 in southwest La Plata County where a crash killed cyclist Benjamin Sonntag on March 4, 2020.
