{"id":45335,"date":"2021-08-07T12:02:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-07T18:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/why-is-it-so-hazy-outside\/"},"modified":"2021-08-07T18:02:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-07T18:02:00","slug":"why-is-it-so-hazy-outside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/why-is-it-so-hazy-outside\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is it so hazy outside?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9a699efc-5c4c-537a-a3bf-5d8c5782d1f0&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1600\" height=\"987\" alt=\"Smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington makes for a colorful sunrise over Durango on Friday morning.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington makes for a colorful sunrise over Durango on Friday morning.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Residents of western Colorado woke up Saturday morning to hazy skies in every direction, the result  of fires closer to the West Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we had that big monsoonal surge out of the southwest, we didn\u2019t really see that smoke from the western wildfires, but the winds have shifted and that\u2019s now bringing all that smoke from the California, Oregon and Washington wildfires southeast, right across western Colorado,\u201d said Jeff Colton, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/gjt\/\" id=\"link-3b0c3fb068aba6f35ded7af01ac692d6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service in Grand Junction<\/a>. \u201cSo we\u2019re all getting engulfed in that smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=COZ019&amp;warncounty=COC067&amp;firewxzone=COZ295&amp;local_place1=6%20Miles%20NNE%20Hermosa%20CO&amp;product1=Hazardous+Weather+Outlook&amp;lat=37.4874&amp;lon=-107.7842#.YQ66iY5KiUk\" id=\"link-fb893c2ad64c6c85c12fd7f6c76b30e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hazardous weather outlook<\/a> issued by the weather service Saturday morning said, \u201cHigh pressure building into the region will result in warm and dry weather today. However, smoke from wildfires in northern California and the Pacific Northwest will lead to poor air quality and reduced visibility at times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The smoke is expected to linger in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on the current weather pattern, it\u2019s going to be with us off and on through the next week,\u201d Colton said. \u201cMost likely, we\u2019ll see periods of very smoky conditions and then it will thin out at times and get a bit better, but then there will be more periods of dense smoke. It\u2019s just going to be coming and going off and on most likely through at least Wednesday of next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6938d3f9-5c0b-59ee-882e-48efa1c51f91&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington reduces visibility in Durango on Saturday morning.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington reduces visibility in Durango on Saturday morning.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The weather outlook said precipitation chances remain low, but increasing moisture late in the week and beyond will likely lead to the development of more widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the higher elevations.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/\" id=\"link-c9872948fd19d697a9a66e6dd4a4c52a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment<\/a> has issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=COZ019&amp;warncounty=COC067&amp;firewxzone=COZ295&amp;local_place1=6%20Miles%20NNE%20Hermosa%20CO&amp;product1=Hazardous+Weather+Outlook&amp;lat=37.4874&amp;lon=-107.7842#.YQ66iY5KiUk\" id=\"link-314250ea5f010c5b41fc7d8cbae24dca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">air quality health advisory<\/a> for wildfire smoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have respiratory illnesses or heart diseases, you may consider limiting your outdoor activities and kind of staying indoors, especially with young kids and the elderly,\u201d Colton said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=793d7342-3d85-5dc8-b365-d4cefcc25f67&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Smoke from wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington reduces visibility in Durango and the Animas Valley on Saturday morning. (Nick Gonzales\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Nick Gonzales<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The CDPHE advisory suggests that people consider limiting outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present and consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and making people feel ill.
