(AP Photo\/Charlie Neibergall)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Charlie Neibergall<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SAITAMA, Japan \u2014 Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi walked off the basketball court together, arm-in-arm, one last time at the Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n<p>They started their journey together five Olympics ago and ended it in the same fashion as always \u2014 with gold medals hanging around their necks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of what we\u2019ve done for USA Basketball, we\u2019ve done together. It\u2019s fitting,\u201d Bird said after the 90-75 win over Japan on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>And now it&#8217;s over \u2014 at least for the 40-year-old Bird.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best comparison is college since you know it\u2019s the end,\u201d Bird said. \u201cNow I always have a wonderful feeling and a great taste in my mouth my senior year. That\u2019s how it is with USA Basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All she and Taurasi have done on the international stage is win and now the pair stands alone with five gold medals \u2014 the first basketball players ever to accomplish that feat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s 20 years and people only get to see these moments,&#8221; Taurasi said. \u201cWe\u2019re on these trips every day together. every conversation. this means a lot to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Bird is retiring from international basketball, Taurasi left the door open after the game in her on-court interview that she&#8217;ll play in Paris in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>She isn&#8217;t actually certain she&#8217;ll play, saying: \u201cWe&#8217;ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, Bird threw a quick jab at her 39-year-old friend for even considering it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHahaha, idiot,\u201d Bird said laughing while standing next to Taurasi and talking with The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=749ae31f-5bbd-5009-a8bf-c6ddc0c97df6&#038;function=cover&#038;type=preview&#038;source=false&#038;width=2000\" alt=\"United States&#039;s Sue Bird, right, and Diana Taurasi pose with their gold medals during the medal ceremony for women&#039;s basketball at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, in Saitama, Japan. (AP Photo\/Charlie Neibergall)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Charlie Neibergall<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The U.S. has now won the last seven Olympic gold medals matching the country\u2019s men\u2019s program for the most ever in a row. The men did it from 1936-68.<\/p>\n<p>With Bird orchestrating the flow of games and Taurasi\u2019s scoring, they have been a constant force for the U.S., providing stability for the women\u2019s program since the 2004 Athens Games. They have won all 38 of the games at the Olympics they\u2019ve competed in.<\/p>\n<p>The names have changed around the pair, including greats Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson, Tamika Catchings and Sylvia Fowles, but the results haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans are on a 55-game Olympic winning streak dating back to the bronze medal game of the 1992 Barcelona Games.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. let Japan know that wasn\u2019t going to change on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans jumped out to a 18-5 lead behind a dominant first quarter by Brittney Griner. The team lead 23-14 after one as Griner had 10 points, taking advantage of the undersized Japanese team. Japan was able to get within six in the second quarter before the Americans went up 11 at the half and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p>As the final buzzer sounded, Bird and Taurasi embraced and then proceeded to hug all of their teammates and the coaching staff.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=def86c3f-6ae1-5a90-923a-32e980410eef&#038;function=cover&#038;type=preview&#038;source=false&#038;width=2000\" alt=\"United States&#039; Brittney Griner (15) shoots over Japan&#039;s Maki Takada (8) during women&#039;s basketball gold medal game at the 2020 Summer Olympics Sunday in Saitama, Japan. It was the most points ever by a U.S. player in a gold medal game, surpassing the 29 by Leslie in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>While Bird has said she is moving on, the future is bright for the U.S. behind Griner, Breanna Stewart and the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-sports-united-states-olympic-team-7ecfb3750476da040206b4998e3046a5\" id=\"link-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six newcomers<\/a> on this year\u2019s team. That included A\u2019ja Wilson, who will be counted on to keep the streak going three years from now at the 2024 Paris Games. Wilson, who celebrated her 25th birthday on Sunday, made her presence felt in her Olympic debut, scoring 19 points in the gold medal game.<\/p>\n<p>But there were other milestones of note Sunday besides Bird\u2019s farewell.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=82841004-d2e0-50a8-979e-4144dc2220a8&#038;function=cover&#038;type=preview&#038;source=false&#038;width=2000\" alt=\"United States&#039; head coach Dawn Staley, center, talks to the players during women&#039;s basketball gold medal game against Japan at the 2020 Summer Olympics Sunday in Saitama, Japan. (AP Photo\/Luca Bruno)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Luca Bruno<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The victory also made Dawn Staley, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-us-basketball-dawn-staley-coach-f7495d799905878dadd840fdd9533462\" id=\"link-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first Black women&#8217;s basketball coach<\/a> for the U.S., the second woman to win a gold medal as a player, assistant and head coach joining Anne Donovan. Staley said after the game that she won&#8217;t come back to coach in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Staley said being part of six Olympics is enough for her, \u201cI&#8217;m full.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The game also marked the end of Carol Callan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-sports-basketball-3ceb9751029eaf9bf229d0991959ca9a\" id=\"link-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">run as the national team director<\/a>. She started right before the Americans won the first gold of this streak in 1996 and has been the architect for this unprecedented run.<\/p>\n<p>Japan, which was the only one of the 11 other teams to ever have beaten the U.S. in an Olympics, won a medal for the first time in the country&#8217;s history. The team&#8217;s best finish before Sunday was fifth.<\/p>\n<p>The host nation has been on the rise <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-sports-japan-france-olympic-team-japan-olympic-team-af65e720fabf47e3bc81b1d513b9b800\" id=\"link-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since it hired coach Tom Hovasse<\/a>. He said when he got the job 4 1\/2 years ago that his team would be playing against the U.S. for the gold at the Tokyo Games \u2014 and would beat them.<\/p>\n<p>He was half right.<\/p>\n<p>The teams met in preliminary pool play and the U.S. won by 17 points after trailing by two after the first quarter. Just like that game, the Americans used their <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-sports-nigeria-olympic-team-united-states-olympic-team-142e0826f50e4bc6564e936a7b5c5040\" id=\"link-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dominant post<\/a> advantage to control the title game. Japan&#8217;s biggest player was 6-foot-1 \u2014 no match for the imposing front line led by Griner, who is 6-9.<\/p>\n<p>While the general public and family members couldn&#8217;t attend the games because of the coronavirus pandemic, Bird did have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCOlympics\/status\/1424211934488973317\" id=\"link-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiancee Megan Rapinoe in the stands<\/a> cheering her on. Bird came over and embraced Rapinoe after the game. She helped the U.S. women&#8217;s soccer team win a bronze medal earlier this week, scoring two goals in that game.<\/p>\n<p>A large contingent of Japanese volunteers, who had been in the Saitama Super Arena for the entire tournament sat and applauded their team.
