{"id":45236,"date":"2021-08-13T01:14:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-13T01:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/kwiyagat-community-academy-hosts-registration-week-events-and-board-meeting\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T09:23:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:23:50","slug":"kwiyagat-community-academy-hosts-registration-week-events-and-board-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/kwiyagat-community-academy-hosts-registration-week-events-and-board-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Kwiyagat Community Academy hosts registration week events and board meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5160aea5-3fd4-5295-b979-44ac87a6954d&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1183\" alt=\"Courtesy of Kwiyagat Community Academy The Kwiyagat Community Academy logo and mascot, chosen by youths from the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Courtesy of Kwiyagat Community Academy The Kwiyagat Community Academy logo and mascot, chosen by youths from the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Kwiyagat Community Academy, the new Ute Mountain Ute charter school in Towaoc, is preparing to delve into its inaugural year.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of its launch, the school hosted registration events for kindergarten and first grade students Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The first day of school is Aug. 23.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, school representatives visited the neighborhoods of Towaoc from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., delivering ice treats to families.<\/p>\n<p>The group ended at Veterans Park in Towaoc, where on Wednesday they hosted a barbecue \u2013 complete with music, an egg toss, a cakewalk and a drawing for a new HP Pavilion Notebook laptop.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday at 5 p.m., the school held a board meeting with its directors, led by Head of School Dan Porter.<\/p>\n<p>The board discussed its progress in preparing to open KCA.<\/p>\n<p>Porter said it was like \u201cbuilding a plane while it\u2019s flying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the board meeting Thursday, 19 students had enrolled, Porter said.<\/p>\n<p>Five packets were picked up at this week\u2019s registration events, and one was completed and returned, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The school is short of its 30-student enrollment goal and is slightly scaling back as it prepares to launch, Porter said.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the school is holding off on hiring a career readiness specialist, and Porter plans to do some of the elder work, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The first grade teacher will also assist with physical education.<\/p>\n<p>The board discussed facilities, and each classroom will be equipped with hand-washing stations \u2014 an upgrade from the original plan.<\/p>\n<p>The board also reviewed COVID-19 procedures, and potential plans for shifting to remote-only learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t do only online,\u201d Porter said. \u201cIt has to be forced by a closure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In that case, the school will provide hot spots and at least two hours of synchronous learning a day, he said. Remote office hours would also be available for parents to call in.<\/p>\n<p>Asynchronous field trips will also be part of the remote learning curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>The group agreed to conduct a Zoom meeting dedicated to discussing pandemic procedures further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we should mask up at this point,\u201d Porter said. \u201cThe tribe\u2019s already headed that way.
