Escalante Days kicked off Friday in Dolores.<\/p>\n

Dolores\u2019 45th annual Founders Day event began this weekend with a kids bike parade, rodeo and ice cream eating contest.<\/p>\n

The chain saw competition, however, is one of the most anticipated events of the annual celebration.<\/p>\n

Divided into two categories, small chain saws and big chain saws, expert sawyers put their skills to the test amid an eager crowd and beating sun.<\/p>\n

It commenced Saturday at 11 a.m. in Flanders Park.<\/p>\n

When Doug Raglan first torched the log during the small chain saw competition, wooden chips immediately started blasting in a flurry \u2014 and so did enthusiastic cheers from the incredulous crowd.<\/p>\n

His time was 7.36 seconds.<\/p>\n

The winners in the small saws division were:<\/p>\n

1st: Doug Raglan2nd: Douglas Raglan 3rd: Bill Raglan<\/div>\n

The big chain saw competition followed next, and it soon became evident that Bill Raglan was claiming first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s cut a couple logs in his day, I can tell you that,\u201d the announcer said.<\/p>\n

Raglan replied, \u201cA couple hundred thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n

He completed the challenge in 8 seconds even.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t even get off my couch in 8 seconds flat,\u201d the announcer joked.<\/p>\n

The winners in the big saws competition were:<\/p>\n

1st: Bill Raglan2nd: Jake Raglan 3rd: Danny Randall <\/div>\n

\u201cEverybody did good,\u201d Bill Raglan told The Journal. <\/em><\/p>\n

He\u2019s turning 90 this year.<\/p>\n

He was proud to have generations of his family demonstrate their chainsaw skills with such success, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the Raglans did good,\u201d he emphasized with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s festivities also included a parade, a watermelon-eating contest, an arm-wrestling competition, a 5K run and street dance party.<\/p>\n
