First St. is slated for completion at the end of May \u2013 a few months behind the Housing Authority\u2019s original goal of occupancy by fall 2021<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be beautiful,\u201d Wheeler said.<\/p>\n<p>Construction was only slightly impacted by the pandemic. The general contractor ordered some materials early on, so there were only a few setbacks, Wheeler said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve caught up with ourselves,\u201d she said. \u201cNo complaints on our side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Housing Authority is accepting applications at it office at 37 N. Madison St.<\/p>\n<p>The office has received 15 applications, but the waitlist has not officially started, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The total cost of the project has not been finalized, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The project will include 42 units \u2014 12 apartments in the Calkins Building, as well as an office space\u2014 and 30 units split among two new buildings.<\/p>\n<p>There will be 20 one-bedroom units and 22 two-bedroom units, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chfainfo.com\/arh\/lihtc\/Pages\/2019-round-two-awards.aspx\" id=\"link-88848e3aa6f155357f546522b72ea2ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Housing and Finance Authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The residences will accommodate households earning 20% to 80% of the area\u2019s median income. After-school tutoring and computer classes will be offered to residents for free, the CHFA reported.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent U.S. Census Bureau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/search-results.html?searchType=web&amp;cssp=SERP&amp;q=Montezuma%20County,%20CO\" id=\"link-2ba82253a1643bbfa9d34aa299a4c2dd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> estimates Montezuma County\u2019s median household income is $49,470.<\/p>\n<p>The Calkins Building was used by the Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1 until 2008. It first opened its doors as a school in 1909.<\/p>\n<p>The building was entered onto the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
