The event featured middle school, high school, college and community races.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really was a community event,\u201d said Fort Lewis head men\u2019s coach Josh Coon. \u201cWe\u2019re proud to host that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durango High School won both high school races, led by individual winners Land Lambert and Angela McManus.<\/p>\n<p>The Durango girls dominated their race with a huge pack running together in the lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was fun; I love running together and we ran together for a long time,\u201d McManus said. \u201cOur strength is to run together and we did that well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=ec705681-cc1c-5ff2-8d50-62cd41ba26c7&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"950\" height=\"1462\" alt=\"Angela McManus of Durango High School wins the 4-Corners Cross Country Classic girls high school race on Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>In the last mile, McManus pulled away from her teammates and finished first in 19 minutes, 55.84 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels cool,\u201d McManus said. \u201cIt\u2019s last home meet and my senior year, so it feels good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Willow Lott and Brynn Aggeler finished second and third for DHS, racing each other to the finish. Lott crossed second in 20:16.08, and Aggeler finished third in 20:16.58.<\/p>\n<p>Nina Quayle finished fourth for DHS in 20:39.29 while Abby Fehr crossed sixth in 20:44.12 to round out an almost perfect score for DHS. The girls won the team title with 16 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ran the way I asked them to run,\u201d said DHS head Ken Flint, saying he wanted them to run controlled for the first two miles and then push it on the last mile. \u201cRunning in a pack pushes everybody\u2019s times a little better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven other DHS girls also finished in the top 23 in the field of 67 runners, including Angelina Kondrat (seventh, 20:58.01), Mia Whistler (ninth, 21:29.16), Sophie Ragsdale (10th, 21:47.39), Avery Cerwin (11th, 21:55.66), Seneca Wilson (20th, 23:25.68) and Kayleigh Frazer (23rd, 23:56.29).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team killed it for sure,\u201d McManus said. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=07d9e4e9-7b3e-505c-ab09-df1126e70a19&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1300\" height=\"769\" alt=\"High School girls take off after the start of the girls high school 4-Corners Cross Country Classic on Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>In the high school boys race, Lambert, Damian Frausto and Nathaniel Ellis ran in front for the first mile or so before Lambert and Frausto pulled away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just push each other to those quick times,\u201d Flint said. \u201cThey\u2019re smart racers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning as a pair has definitely helped us,\u201d Frausto said, noting that they\u2019ve finished next to each other at every race this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019ve been doing all year,\u201d Lambert said.<\/p>\n<p>The two ran together until the about the last 1,000 meters, when Frausto got a cramp and Lambert kept going to cross first in 16:26.02. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Ellis finished fourth in 17:55.00, Charlie Dillman finished seventh in 18:26.14 and Nove Tocco placed 10th in 18:41.67 to help the DHS boys win the team title with 24 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels good, for sure,\u201d Lambert said about the team\u2019s win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has just been running good,\u201d Frausto said.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Pope finished 27th in 20:06.99, Brodie Dorko slashed over 2 minutes off his previous personal record to place 29th in 20:20.34, Micah Zastrocky crossed 38th in 20:51.47 and Josh Yu placed 43rd in a personal record 21:04.90 for the Demons.<\/p>\n<p>After the high school races, it was Fort Lewis\u2019 turn to run.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=36e784d0-0359-5f60-bdc7-4a2bfa3cb5c6&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1300\" height=\"867\" alt=\"Members of the Fort Lewis College women's cross country team compete in the 4-Corners Cross Country Classic women's college race on Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The Skyhawks\u2019 women\u2019s team competed with the University of New Mexico in their race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really excited they came up,\u201d said FLC head women\u2019s coach Brett Sublett. \u201cRacing a Division I team is not something you pass up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a big meet coming up in Huntsville, Alabama, the team used Friday\u2019s race as sort of a time trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re fighting for spots on the travel roster,\u201d Sublett said. \u201cThat was some incentive for the gals to push it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angel Curley led Fort Lewis, placing sixth in the 5k in 19:51.96.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=7092d51a-6475-5329-9125-7f5b1554faad&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1300\" height=\"878\" alt=\"Angel Curley of Fort Lewis College women's cross county team places sixth in the 4-Corners Cross Country Classic women's college race on Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Katie Fankhouser ran in her first race of the season and was the second Fort Lewis finisher, placing eighth in 20:26.83.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe shined,\u201d Sublett said.<\/p>\n<p>Karla De La Cruz placed ninth in 20:30.19, Dorothy Elder crossed 12th in 20:45.79, Krista Benze finished 13th in 20:54.49, Carmella Wright placed 14th in her first race of the year in 20:54.49, and Taylor Murphy placed 15th in 20:59.22.<\/p>\n<p>Sublett said Wright, \u201creally dug in and fought hard today\u201d and that Curley \u201calways shows up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UNM\u2019s Semira Firezghi finished first in 18:34.70.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s race, Fort Lewis squared off with Din\u00e9 College and unattached runners from other schools.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the team\u2019s runners sat out ahead of the University of Alabama Huntsville Open \u201cto remove a little stress,\u201d Coon said.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Lewis\u2019 John Ngaruiya ended up winning the 8k race in 27:30.35.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=89cc3234-bb8f-5de0-87f2-13257f8a463b&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1300\" height=\"962\" alt=\"John Ngaruiya of Fort Lewis College men's cross county team won the 4-Corners Cross Country Classic men's college race on Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cHe did great,\u201d Coon said. \u201cOur goal was to work on closing and he closed strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cebastian Marquez crossed second in 27:46.51.<\/p>\n<p>Brady Burrough finished fourth in 28:33.73, Elvis Chelak crossed fifth in 28:39.34, Preston Graul finished seventh in 28:54.73, Asa Demmert placed 10th in 29:12.31 and Chris Rohlf finished 11th in 29:41.81.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a deep team and most of the guys executed perfectly,\u201d Coon said.<\/p>\n<p>In the middle school races, Lacey Ruggiero won the girls\u2019 3k race by over 22 seconds in 12:06.93.
