(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald file)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After the sentencing of Mark Redwine on Friday, Jackson Sibley, a friend of Dylan Redwine, started whooping and hollering with elation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was running and yelling across campus,\u201d Sibley said during a phone interview from Gunnison, where he is a senior at Western Colorado University. \u201cI\u2019m sure people thought I was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sibley is the same age as Dylan \u2013 they were both in eighth grade when he disappeared. The past nine years have been difficult, not only for his family, but for the close-knit group of friends Dylan had in Bayfield, even after he had moved with his mother to the Colorado Springs area.<\/p>\n<p>Losing a friend to mysterious circumstances at such a young age \u201chad a huge impact,\u201d Sibley said. \u201cIt was really hard at the time because he was always one of our friends in our group, and he was missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4ea24664-eedd-40f4-92af-79f561751e27&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" alt=\"Jackson Sibley, left, and Chris Kane were among the friends of Dylan Redwine who spoke after his disappearance in November 2012. (Durango Herald file)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Bayfield is a small community, and he said he and his friends appreciated the concern of their parents and other families in the area as they joined searches and held vigils in his memory. They grieved when Dylan\u2019s partial remains were found six months later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn really unfortunate circumstances, it created a strong bond,\u201d he said, adding that he plans to come home next weekend to see his friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel really happy about it,\u201d Sibley said of Mark Redwine\u2019s 48-year sentence. \u201cBut I\u2019m sad he isn\u2019t here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friends and family of Elaine Hall, Dylan\u2019s mother, on Friday agreed that they felt relief, but it will never make up for the loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, I feel that Dylan got justice, and Mark got exactly what he deserved, under state law,\u201d said Betsy Horvath, who was married to Mark Redwine before he married Elaine Hall and jokingly refers to herself as the \u201cfirst bitter ex-wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us are now safe,\u201d she said after the sentencing. \u201cHe can\u2019t hurt anyone, and he can\u2019t intimidate anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having such a heinous act take place within a family is unsettling, she said, and it impacted her two sons, as well.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=48785ce9-83c1-432b-9129-6d6e2cbac1c5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1627\" height=\"1226\" alt=\"Cory Redwine, bother of Dylan Redwine, holds back emotions while talking about his brother in June 2013, about the time Dylan\u2019s remains were located several miles up Middle Mountain Road near Vallecito Reservoir. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald file)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">JERRY McBRIDE\/Durango Herald<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cThey have all done a great job, realizing their dad\u2019s actions aren\u2019t theirs,\u201d she said of her sons, as well as Cory Redwine, Dylan\u2019s older brother. \u201cThey are wonderful, wonderful young men, and they are nothing like their father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the sentence brings some closure, Horvath said the biggest relief for her was when the jury found her ex-husband guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Having a jury examine the evidence and reach a unanimous verdict that Redwine is guilty brought validation to family members who knew Redwine killed his own son, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDylan is an amazing young man that brought a community together,\u201d she said. \u201cWe forged friendships that will never be severed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Horvath, Dylan\u2019s aunt, Shari Kaotaniemi, traveled a long way this week to be with Elaine Hall and her family during the sentencing. Elaine Hall\u2019s older sister now lives in Oregon, where people sometimes recognize a picture of her nephew in her office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a family, Dylan was the baby,\u201d she said of her four sisters and their children. \u201cHe would be 23 now. We all lost the baby of the family.
