{"id":43895,"date":"2021-11-05T22:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/two-bus-routes-canceled-as-students-return-to-school\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T09:16:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:16:24","slug":"two-bus-routes-canceled-as-students-return-to-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/two-bus-routes-canceled-as-students-return-to-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Two bus routes canceled as students return to school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b1f0ce47-1a75-4f9d-933a-505d70ed1655&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1333\" height=\"641\" alt=\"The Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 released a letter Thursday informing families of district COVID-19 cases.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 released a letter Thursday informing families of district COVID-19 cases.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Erika Alvero<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Two Montezuma-Cortez School District School District RE-1 bus routes have been canceled for a week beginning Monday \u2013 the day students were slated to return to school after all but district charter schools were closed, a Friday press release said.<\/p>\n<p>The two impacted bus routes are known as the \u201cNo. 45 Penguin Bus\u201d and \u201cNo.46 Camel Bus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those bus routes transport students from Montezuma-Cortez Middle and High Schools, Mesa Elementary School, Manaugh Elementary School and Southwest Open School, the release said.<\/p>\n<p>The Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1 Transportation Department is facing \u201cextreme staff shortages,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of staff shortages has rippled across the district. For example, the district reported 62 teachers absent from the classroom on Oct. 5. More than 20 were without substitutes.<\/p>\n<p>Substitutes were unavailable to cover the transportation staff shortages. If additional drivers are sourced,  the district will notify families immediately, the release said.<\/p>\n<p>The school closures were started Oct. 27 because of a climb in COVID-19 cases and resulting impact on workforce, a letter from Superintendent Risha VanderWey stated.<\/p>\n<p>In an Oct. 26 announcement, the district reported more than 700 students had been quarantined and five hospitalized because of the coronavirus.
