(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Purgatory Resort\u2019s snowmaking crews caught a break this week, getting the cold weather needed to prime the slopes for this weekend\u2019s opening day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoo! We pulled it off last night, dude,\u201d said Slopes Manager Josh Hamill on Thursday morning. \u201cIt\u2019s a Christmas miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The snowmaking crew had such a fruitful night Wednesday that the resort decided it would go back to its original plan of opening on Saturday after announcing earlier this week it would postpone opening day until Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=12295711-5f41-57ba-932b-2bdcea100932&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1578\" height=\"1061\" alt=\"After a productive night of snowmaking, Purgatory Resort\u2019s Slopes Manager Josh Hamill takes off in a snow grooming machine. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Since Purgatory\u2019s snowmaking season began about a month ago, the weather has often been too warm to make snow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve only had about 10 good snowmaking days in the past 30 days,\u201d Hamill said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a challenging start. We\u2019ve had shorter windows, and temps haven\u2019t been as cooperative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Combating the temperature challenge for snowmaking this fall is new technology that allows snowmakers to get to work as soon as conditions are perfect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith some upgraded snow guns and some newer technology, we\u2019re able to push the limits and be creative,\u201d Hamill said.<\/p>\n<p>Purgatory\u2019s new TR10 snow cannons allow for nearly double the snowmaking capacity the resort used to have. The snow cannons are also much more energy efficient, Hamill said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=071981a2-cc14-58a8-8551-5d96e810465e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1019\" alt=\"Josh Hamill, slopes manager with Purgatory Resort, checks out one of the resort\u2019s new TR10 snow cannons. You set them up and leave,\u201d he said. \u201cWe program a service temp in there, so when it hits 27 degrees Fahrenheit, it lets our pump house know, and he gets on the computer and hits start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamill can even turn the new snow cannons on and off with an app on his cellphone.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday night, each TR10 snow cannon was producing 85 gallons of snow per minute, Hamill said.<\/p>\n<p>Perfect conditions for snowmaking are 10 degrees Fahrenheit, 10% humidity, and no wind or clouds, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we start to get below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, things freeze really fast and it can start to get challenging,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=f5a2cc53-44f7-585b-a7a7-0701cd9b2e2f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1030\" alt=\"Josh Hamill, slopes manager with Purgatory Resort, tracks through freshly made snow after an exceptional night of snowmaking Wednesday. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>When temperatures are perfect, Purgatory\u2019s snow guns are pumping 1,800 to 2,300 gallons of water a minute for snowmaking.<\/p>\n<p>The water Purgatory uses for snowmaking comes from a mixture of snowmelt that collects in a 200-million-gallon pond across from the resort, and water from the Cascade Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Hamill said the snow that his crew makes is the equivalent of backfill, only setting up a foundation for fresh powder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur snowmaking system is more filled in voids,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s about getting a nice solid base that\u2019s going to last through the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis time of the year is both very exciting and very stressful for snowmakers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hamill said snowmaking is an extremely dangerous job, likening the amount of risk involved to being a crab fisherman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFreezing temps, wind chill, fatigue and working at night with a headlamp, you have to have a lot of situational awareness,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s so noisy and you\u2019re in a man-made blizzard. It\u2019s 90 miles an hour for 12 hours on a really cold night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamill said he\u2019s lucky to have such a good crew to work with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone around the mountain has been working really hard. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Hamill decided to become a snowmaker 22 years ago as a way to earn money while competing to make it as a professional snowboarder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved here to be a professional snowboarder, and it didn\u2019t quite work out.
