{"id":43282,"date":"2021-12-13T00:31:38","date_gmt":"2021-12-13T00:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/more-winter-weather-on-the-way-to-southwest-colorado\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T09:12:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:12:29","slug":"more-winter-weather-on-the-way-to-southwest-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/more-winter-weather-on-the-way-to-southwest-colorado\/","title":{"rendered":"More winter weather on the way to Southwest Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=ea058de2-775e-40c2-8f00-06f085749707&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1542\" height=\"1028\" alt=\"The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory starting Friday evening for the southwest San Juan Mountains, specifically the towns of Silverton, Rico and Hesperus.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory starting Friday evening for the southwest San Juan Mountains, specifically the towns of Silverton, Rico and Hesperus.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Another storm will hit Southwest Colorado on Tuesday afternoon, following on the heels of a storm last week that brought the first measurable amount of snow to the region\u2019s lower elevations and dumped up to 2 feet of snow in the San Juan Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like mainly rain for the lower elevations, possibly some snow,\u201d said hydro-meteorological technician Dan Cuevas with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. \u201cThis storm is not going to be as cold as the previous system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuevas said the storm system is warmer because it originated farther south in the Pacific Ocean than the previous storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not coming in from as far north as the other system. It doesn\u2019t have quite the cold origin the other one did,\u201d Cuevas said.<\/p>\n<p>Snow in the mountains is expected to begin Tuesday afternoon and continue through Wednesday afternoon, with rain in the lower elevations Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll probably be about 6 to 12 inches (of snow) up high,\u201d Cuevas said.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avalanche.state.co.us\/forecasts\/backcountry-avalanche\/south-san-juan\/\" id=\"link-2e1558aeb7189a76b5f91bb729d0a8ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Avalanche Center<\/a> announced an avalanche advisory for the Rocky Mountains, including the southern San Juan Mountains. The risk \u2013 measured on a scale of one to five from \u201clow\u201d to \u201cextreme\u201d \u2013 was considered \u201cconsiderable,\u201d or Level 3, near and above treeline, and \u201dmoderate\u201c below treeline. It was set to expire 6 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s storm came amid a cold snap. Snow began falling in the late afternoon, and roads became icy as they reached freezing temperatures about 6 p.m. on U.S. Highway 160. The Colorado State Patrol reported a dozen slide-offs and crashes by 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Cuevas said last week\u2019s storm system brought between 10 to 20 inches of snow in higher elevations and 4 to 5 inches in lower elevations like Durango.<\/p>\n<p>The storm proved to be a pre-holiday bounty for regional ski areas.<\/p>\n<p>Purgatory Resort reported it received as much as 32 inches of snow from last week\u2019s storms, with 25 inches coming just on Thursday night. Sunday, Purgatory reported a base of 30 to 35 inches of packed snow.<\/p>\n<p>Telluride Ski Resort reported receiving 31 inches of new snow in the past eight days, with a base Sunday of  22 inches of packed snow.
