But I don\u2019t think that it works for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/changchavkinscholars.org\/faqs\/\" id=\"link-7a759f649c5c6b4a00e1e3d51aff384b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chang-Chavkin scholarship<\/a> she was awarded has laid the foundation for her dream, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship, opened to Montezuma-Cortez students last year, endows high-achieving, low-income, first-generation students with $60,000 in college funds.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not only the monetary backing that has made a difference though, Graf said. The scholarship organization provides four years of college advisement.<\/p>\n<p>This advisement goes beyond academia, said scholarship director Valene Bakersfield.<\/p>\n<p>The Chang-Chavkin team also hopes to be a source of emotional and social support throughout the students\u2019 college careers.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes this can even mean one-on-one meetings, or calls out of the blue to just chat about life, Bakersfield said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stay with them til the day they graduate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While the scholarship committee searches for high-achieving students, there is no GPA requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can overlook some things,\u201d Bakersfield said.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates from six high schools were considered during Graf\u2019s application cycle, and she was one of three semifinalists at Montezuma-Cortez High School.<\/p>\n<p>For Graf, it was important to express \u201chow grateful and thankful I am for being a part of the Chang-Chavkin scholarship program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three-step selection process was challenging at times, she said, but it\u2019s prepared her for college applications.<\/p>\n<p>While she\u2019s applying to many schools, she\u2019s got her sights set on Brown University or Colorado College.<\/p>\n<p>She wants to pursue an English degree, which she said could open the doors to a variety of careers \u2014 editing, proofreading, journalism or writing.<\/p>\n<p>Graf, ambitious and well-spoken, is aware of the world waiting before her.<\/p>\n<p>An avid participant in her school\u2019s theater program, she\u2019s most comfortable behind the scenes, facilitating staged productions and selecting costumes.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s got a penchant for true crime podcasts \u2013 particularly \u201cCrime Junkie\u201d and immerses herself in books and music.<\/p>\n<p>Created by philanthropists Arnie Chavkin and Laura Chang, the Chang-Chavkin scholarship is also available in Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, Norwood and Nucla school districts, as well as some in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>The application is open, and can be accessed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantinterface.com\/Home\/Logon?urlkey=telluridescholarship\" id=\"link-ddda774ecaf3178f9d419725043798fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M-CHS student Shylee Graf selected as scholarship recipient; program taking applications <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":43053,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[155,28,167,216,29,181,93],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-43052","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-education","tag-headlines","tag-local-news-lead","tag-montezuma-cortez-school-district-re-1","tag-newsletter","tag-school","tag-students"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43052","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=43052"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43052\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":85554,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43052\/revisions\/85554"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/43053"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=43052"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=43052"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=43052"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=43052"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
