Joel Priest\/Special to the Herald<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Not only did Bayfield\u2019s on-court play at the state volleyball championships open eyes, particularly its five-game victory over defending champion Eaton, the Wolverines\u2019 supporters also made the team hard to miss.<\/p>\n<p>Far and away bettering any other squad\u2019s rooters filling the Broadmoor World Arena, Bayfield supporters brought a vibrant poster that illuminated multiple players\u2019 names with strands of Christmas lights and reduced a casual observer\u2019s need for a roster almost to zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love the support and love everybody coming out and cheering. It\u2019s just really fun to fill the gym with that positive atmosphere and loud energy,\u201d senior Sage Killough had said earlier in the season. \u201cThe community in Bayfield\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love our sponsors,\u201d said her senior sister, Payton Killough. \u201cThey give us so many opportunities, and it\u2019s great for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Great enough to help the Lady Wolverines lead the Intermountain League with a 7-1 record and 20-10 overall record for fall 2021, which ended with several postseason all-IML honors.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=61d13c09-c883-5d77-8235-a12c8bc5e2c7&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1333\" height=\"2000\" alt=\"Bayfield's Annie Fusco (8) blasts a kill against Greeley-based University during the state volleyball championships in The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. Joel Priest\/Special to the Herald<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Named Colorado\u2019s MaxPreps\/AVCA National player of the week Oct. 11-17 with a 75-kill, 39-dig performance in home matches versus Alamosa, Pagosa Springs and Centauri, senior Annie Fusco was named first team all-league. Fusco led the IML in kills, and Class 3A with 475 kills. She also earned first team all-3A honors, with 263 digs and served a team-high 47 aces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything\u2019s back to normal. We\u2019d been working hard all summer, and it was surreal to be back in game action,\u201d Fusco said during the season.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow senior outside hitter Emily Nelson received first team all-IML honors and honorable mention all-3A. Nelson joined the top five in kills (196) and digs (306).  After   two years as BHS\u2019 starting libero, Nelson became an all-around asset with 41 service aces, placing her in the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Terene Foutz, who kicked off the season by donating a state-of-the-art videoboard\/scorer\u2019s table for the BHS Gymnasium, was named the Intermountain League\u2019s coach of the year. Foutz shared the honor with Centauri\u2019s first-year skipper Alexis \u201cAli\u201d Miller, a former Adams State University assistant, who directed the Falcons to a 4-3 league record and 14-10 overall finish after replacing Bayfield alumna Candace Shaw. Because of COVID-19 concerns, Centauri and Montezuma-Cortez could not play their second head-to-head match.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=c7b13453-223a-5d0b-ae23-79d55e8321bd&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1400\" height=\"934\" alt=\"Bayfield\u2019s Kenasea Byrd (11) celebrates a point against Alamosa during the state volleyball championships in The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. Joel Priest\/Special to the Herald<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>IML player of the year went to M-CHS senior Avery Wright, who joined Fusco and Centauri\u2019s Hennessy Mortensen as coaches\u2019 selections after powering the Panthers to a 15-7 overall record and a 13-2 mark in non-league action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have such hard teams \u2026 and I\u2019m just proud to be part of this league,\u201d Wright said earlier in the season. \u201cI think a lot of people forget about us because we\u2019re not in the big Denver area, so when we come, they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh there\u2019s actually good volleyball in the Southwest!\u2019 It\u2019s good to show them that \u2013 I\u2019m so proud of the Intermountain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sage Killough was a second team All-IML choice, despite leading the league and ranking second in 3A with 851 assists.<\/p>\n<p>Junior middle Kenasea Byrd led the Intermountain with a .320 hitting percentage (140 kills in 322 attempts, with only 37 errors), and earned second team all-IML as BHS\u2019 top blocker.
