(Courtesy of Tuba City Unified School District)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 Superintendent Risha VanderWey was placed on paid administrative leave Friday amid unclear circumstances around the decision and mostly silence from the Board of Education.<\/p>\n<p>News of the board\u2019s decision began to circulate Thursday through Cortez schools and the City Council, although no official announcement was made until Monday, when Board President Sheri Noyes issued a brief, three-sentence letter announcing VanderWey\u2019s leave.<\/p>\n<p>Noyes refused to provide additional details.<\/p>\n<p>In VanderWey\u2019s place a \u201cquorum of highly qualified administrative staff members\u201d will fulfill her duties until further notice, the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Noyes told <em id=\"emphasis-0dd7ff3af6e039be847ee00a97aa168f\">The Journal<\/em> Monday morning she wrote the letter to address \u201cmisinformation\u201d flowing about VanderWey\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of frustrating from my end,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She declined to comment further on VanderWey\u2019s situation, and whether VanderWey\u2019s leave was imposed or voluntary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to do this the legal way,\u201d Noyes said.<\/p>\n<p>She said she didn\u2019t want to place anyone in the school district under duress amid the situation.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, she said, provides the details available for release right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey (the community) can come to their own conclusion,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Former assistant superintendent Lis Richard resigned from her position Jan. 4 on disability leave. VanderWey was initially not part of the meeting, but was invited in to talk before again being excused, at which point the board had \u201cvery little discussion\u201d following, Noyes said.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting agenda listed the reason for the private session as \u201ca personnel matter regarding the Superintendent\u2019s evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VanderWey did not respond to <em id=\"emphasis-7afd5ffe3d7ea70561531fd36f8e2668\">The Journal\u2019s <\/em>requests by phone and text for comment, beginning Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-59830dcfbd7444c53c8bc17732f77d80\">The Journal <\/em>sent an email to Noyes Friday evening, and left a voicemail for her Saturday afternoon. The rest of the board members did not respond to emails sent Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Board directors are:<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">Sheri Noyes, District F.Sherri Wright, District C.
