Don Coram qualified for the June primary ballot Tuesday as he seeks to unseat Rep. Lauren Boebert from Colorado\u2019s 3rd Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p>Coram successfully petitioned onto the ballot after surpassing the required threshold of 1,500 valid signatures by a margin of 63 signatures, according to the Election Division of the Secretary of State\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>The qualification makes Coram the only Republican to challenge Boebert in the primary. Three Democrats are also running for the CD3 seat, but the district hasn\u2019t elected a Democratic representative in more than a decade, and recent redistricting gave the region an even larger conservative slant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal in front of me right now is to win the primary,\u201d Coram told <em id=\"emphasis-e3b1caf8ba753326009d002020c477a7\">The Durango Herald<\/em>. \u201cWhen we win the primary, which we will, we will move on and we will talk about policies and issues and solutions. And frankly, it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re Democrat or Republican, or unaffiliated. Johnson\/Durango Herald file)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The Montrose County resident said he plans to win voters over with his track record of passing legislation when Republicans were in the majority and minority during his 12 years as a state representative. He hopes to appeal to the \u201c80% in the middle that\u2019s being left out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon Coram is a corrupt liberal who buddies up to Democrats every chance he gets,\u201d Boebert\u2019s campaign said in an emailed statement. \u201cCorrupt Coram will be soundly defeated in the Republican primary because Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is the only conservative in this race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boebert introduced the \u201cCorrupt Coram\u201d nickname in <a href=\"https:\/\/corruptcoram.com\/\" id=\"link-71843e12dfd4b01ce9d76b66d7ee9b0e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attack ads<\/a> accusing the state senator of passing hemp legislation to enrich himself and his business partners.<\/p>\n<p>Coram called the accusations, which he has <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/colorado_politics\/lies-lies-and-damn-lies-boeberts-gop-challenger-swings-back-at-ads-alleging-hemp-scheme\/article_0904a471-b018-5c67-8b57-c21cd229211b.html\" id=\"link-001c09e1f63cc7c1725591005a7bc709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously refuted<\/a>, an \u201cabsolute lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marina Zimmerman, a third Republican running for Congress in CD3, withdrew from the race entirely on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The business owner from Arboles in Archuleta County failed to secure the necessary votes from delegates for the 3rd District during Friday\u2019s Republican district assembly, meaning she won\u2019t appear on the June primary ballot.<\/p>\n<p>After losing in the district assembly process, Zimmerman temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Marina4Colorado\/status\/1512933854839025672\" id=\"link-6588a5510f15370d7f1845ce747fcb6a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced <\/a>a write-in campaign before deciding to withdraw from the race the next day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo pursue a write-in campaign is extremely expensive and it\u2019s very trying,\u201d Zimmerman told the <em id=\"emphasis-f563c6e5fee50e940590f0f555a49f31\">Herald<\/em>. \u201cYou know, I felt like we could do it, but I also worried then also about splitting the votes, and Lauren getting in another term accidentally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zimmerman worried that she might detract votes from Coram and said she has doubts about his campaign but hopes the state senator pulls enough voter support to beat Boebert in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>Coram called Zimmerman\u2019s decision \u201cnoble,\u201d adding that \u201cto split the vote would not be beneficial for rural Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zimmerman said she ran because she considers Boebert and the \u201ccore\u201d of the Republican Party to be disconnected from reality for promoting the conspiracy theory QAnon and questioning the validity of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just gotten to such a horrible, hateful point,\u201d Zimmerman said. \u201cBut it\u2019s only that core. \u2026 I\u2019ve been crisscrossing the district for the last year. I have talked to a lot of really good Republicans who are just as fed up with all of this as I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three Democratic challengers remain in the race after Democrat Scott Yates withdrew his petition to appear on the June primary ballot on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Yates told the <em id=\"emphasis-68650b4df03bc48c13df14d31590b10b\">Herald <\/em>he withdrew his petition after he didn\u2019t meet the 1,500 signature threshold. Yates submitted more than 1,900 signatures but hundreds were deemed invalid, he said. He decided to withdraw rather than challenge the signatures in court because he didn\u2019t want to \u201clook like the guy who sued to get on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yates made eliminating daylight saving time his signature campaign issue in an effort to unite people rather than divide, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe politics industry views (outrage) as the only way to run a race and so I was outside of that process,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was harder to raise money, it was harder to get anybody\u2019s attention, people kind of didn\u2019t take me seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats likely face an uphill battle to beat a Republican candidate for CD3, having lost the last six elections. Sol Sandoval, the Democratic fundraising front-runner, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/as-race-for-cd3-tightens-we-asked-candidates-about-their-policy-positions\/\" id=\"link-c3a203de52364e3bbf7b2d5abd0dba0e\" target=\"_blank\">argued <\/a>that her campaign will prevail by engaging Latino communities and unaffiliated voters \u201cwho otherwise may not feel this race speaks to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skye Witley, a senior at American University in Washington, D.C., is an intern for The Durango Herald and The Journal in Cortez.
