{"id":41065,"date":"2022-04-20T22:41:16","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T04:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/montezuma-cortez-leaves-superintendent-position-open\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T02:58:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T08:58:52","slug":"montezuma-cortez-leaves-superintendent-position-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/montezuma-cortez-leaves-superintendent-position-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Montezuma-Cortez leaves superintendent position open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=1dd4f804-7a0f-430d-9ed2-38a1bc0c1794&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1333\" height=\"920\" alt=\"Families can pick up hot spots at the Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1 office or at their children\u2019s schools.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Families can pick up hot spots at the Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1 office or at their children\u2019s schools.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">The Journal file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to keep its superintendent position open.<\/p>\n<p>A resolution to appoint a superintendent for the 2022-23 school year was an action item on Tuesday\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The board previously named three finalists but only interviewed one, Jack Props, after two others, David Crews and Christopher Burr, withdrew their names from consideration before their interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Board Director Cody Wells made the motion to keep the superintendent position open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like Mr. Props is very personable, but I just was concerned about the size of our district and his experience,\u201d Board Director Sherri Wright said. \u201cI just didn\u2019t feel like his experience was a good fit with our district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other board members agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Board Director Ed Rice pointed out that the district had nine applicants, and the board only interviewed one.<\/p>\n<p>Board President Sheri Noyes said the board\u2019s finalist \u201cpros and cons aligned a lot with the community group as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wells said that Montezuma-Cortez is a \u201cpretty interesting district to come into\u201d and that while Props is a \u201cgreat guy,\u201d he wasn\u2019t the right fit for the district.<\/p>\n<p>Wells said the board should wait and dedicate more time to the superintendent search, and maybe begin again in January.<\/p>\n<p>Interim Superintendent Tom Burris previously told <em id=\"emphasis-6f2ec7084befdb5df9e47aa5cbd87654\">The Journal <\/em>that he would be happy to stay in the position as full-time superintendent if necessary, depending on district need and his family.<\/p>\n<p>Props is a principal in the Chama School District in New Mexico. He previously was superintendent of the Vaughn School District in New Mexico, which had about 100 students.<\/p>\n<p>Crews is superintendent of the Sangre de Cristo School District.<\/p>\n<p>Many in Cortez were concerned about Crews after reading about an incident that occurred while he served as superintendent of the Norwood School District.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-918d1b9b44dacde0ef28ddae9724d50b\">The Denver Post<\/em> published a Bloomberg News report of a hazing incident in 2012 in which three Norwood High School students bound and sodomized their classmate on an empty school bus at a state wrestling match in Denver.
