{"id":41040,"date":"2022-04-21T11:11:15","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T17:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/out-of-state-funding-fuels-3rd-congressional-district-race-on-western-slope\/"},"modified":"2022-04-21T17:11:15","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T17:11:15","slug":"out-of-state-funding-fuels-3rd-congressional-district-race-on-western-slope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/out-of-state-funding-fuels-3rd-congressional-district-race-on-western-slope\/","title":{"rendered":"Out-of-state funding fuels 3rd Congressional District race on Western Slope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Political newcomer and congressional candidate Alex Walker has brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/04\/15\/alex-walker-lauren-boebert-tiktok\/\" id=\"link-7264166dde078527c48dd13833ca12da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national attention<\/a>, as well as national money, to his bid to unseat Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert.<\/p>\n<p>Walker, a Democrat who landed on the primary ballot via petition, raised approximately $129,000 since announcing his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District in late February, but it appears not much came from inside the district he seeks to represent.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=c7110429-e658-519f-8217-119289e3790b&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1093\" height=\"1477\" alt=\"Walker\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Walker<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>About $55,500 of that haul was itemized in his campaign\u2019s recent Federal Election Commission financial filings, meaning the individual contribution or aggregate from the donor exceeded $200. Two of those about 100 higher-dollar contributions came from within the district, a $250 donation from Olathe and another $250 donation from Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>Donors from Colorado contributed approximately $20,800 in itemized contributions. That includes $2,900 \u2013 the individual limit per election \u2013 each from Walker\u2019s parents, Cynthia and Sam. Sam Walker is the one-time chief legal officer for the Denver-based Molson Coors Brewing Co. and now advises Attorney General Phil Weiser in a volunteer role.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado Springs developer and ardent Democratic supporter Charles Murphy contributed $1,000. Two current employees within the Attorney General\u2019s Office also donated.<\/p>\n<p>About 35% of Walker\u2019s high-dollar donors came from Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Walker also received a large chunk of cash from California donors. Itemized contributions from California total about $13,000. Walker donated $1,000 himself and used a Los Angeles address for it.<\/p>\n<p>Walker\u2019s campaign said the largest share of contributions came from Colorado but did not provide more specific geographical breakdowns within the unitemized contributions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlex\u2019s campaign is building the strongest coalition to defeat Lauren Boebert,\u201d campaign manager Amy Beihl wrote in an email. \u201cHis campaign has received the support of over 4,700 individual contributors at an average donation of $29 from all 50 states with the largest share coming from Colorado. He\u2019s proud to have a campaign powered by grassroots supporters that want to see common sense leadership that will deliver results for Colorado families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walker\u2019s campaign listed a $7,525 expenditure for petition signature gathering through a Florida-based firm. He also listed a $5,000 payment to the Colorado Democratic Party for voter file access.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Other fundraising in the 3rd District<\/div>\n<p>It will be an uphill battle for any candidate, however, to bring in the amount of money necessary to front a meaningful challenge to Boebert.<\/p>\n<p>She brought in about $838,000 in the first quarter alone and has so far raised over $4 million in her re-election bid.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=baa38527-625d-4466-823e-4214f185e72a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"625\" height=\"625\" alt=\"Boebert\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Boebert<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Of her campaign\u2019s itemized contributions over $200, about 38% of donors are from Colorado. Within all of her campaign\u2019s itemized contributions, which in this case included smaller dollar amounts as well, about one-third came from Colorado donors.<\/p>\n<p>Boebert\u2019s significant expenditures in the first quarter include over $470,000 in media and $35,000 for travel.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=63559934-f581-47df-8cbf-a2549be38d4f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"800\" height=\"775\" alt=\"Coram\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Coram<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Boebert\u2019s Republican primary opponent, state <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradonewsline.com\/briefs\/state-sen-don-coram-to-face-rep-lauren-boebert-in-june-gop-primary\/\" id=\"link-e167cb6279e8686e61d0f05b1b619cb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Don Coram<\/a>, raised more than $89,000 in the first quarter. Of his campaign\u2019s itemized contributions over $200, about 90% of those donors came from Colorado and most of them came from within the district.<\/p>\n<p>Coram\u2019s campaign spent about $15,500 on petition signature gathering through the Grand Junction-based Best Slope Public Affairs.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=09852acf-0b0e-517f-844e-5a8431888716&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1080\" height=\"531\" alt=\"Sandoval\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Sandoval<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>On the Democratic side, Pueblo activist Sol Sandoval still leads in fundraising efforts. She raked in more than $264,000 in the first quarter, bringing her total haul since launching her campaign to over $800,000. Of her campaign\u2019s itemized contributions over $200, approximately 45% of those donors came from within Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=addae59c-2f86-5552-819f-47ae6d5dcd2f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1201\" height=\"1645\" alt=\"Frisch\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Frisch<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Sandoval was the <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradonewsline.com\/briefs\/sol-sandoval-of-pueblo-lands-spot-on-democratic-primary-ballot-for-lauren-boeberts-seat\/\" id=\"link-cfd962157bd40b40c9b938c76026bfe1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only Democratic candidate to get on the primary ballot via assembly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, former Aspen City Council member Adam Frisch brought in about $231,000 from the first quarter, in addition to loaning his campaign over $1.5 million of his own money.
