Local youths will be involved in the research project.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Fozzie\u2019s Farm<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Two free water workshops will be offered in June at Fozzie\u2019s Farm, at 19760 County Road W in Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>On June 1, Fozzie\u2019s Farm in Lewis will host a free irrigation water workshop starting at 9:30 a.m. Lunch is included.<\/p>\n<p>The first session focuses on the mechanics of applying irrigation water. Topics include delivery, head gates, measuring devices, gated pipe and side-roll sprinkler systems.<\/p>\n<p>The second session is about the state of the watershed. Topics are aridification, drought planning and water conservation research.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, the National Resource Conservation Service will discuss irrigation management techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The farm is at 19760 County Road W in Lewis. Register by May 26. Contact Jay Loschert at <a href=\"mailto:jay@montezumaland.org\">jay@montezumaland.org<\/a> or call 970-564-1664.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Water training for teachers<\/div>\n<p>June 8-9, a professional development workshop for teachers and educators on water topics will be offered at the farm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForests to Faucets: My Water Comes from the San Juan Mountains\u201c is offered in partnership by Mountain Studies Institute, Montezuma Land Conservancy, San Juan Mountains Association, Water Information Program and Fort Lewis College.<\/p>\n<p>Participating teachers will wear the \u201cstudent hat\u201d as they explore relevant topics in drought management, agriculture and water ecology.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers will sample place-based field trips, participate in hands-on activities and learn from water professionals, all of which they can bring back to their students and classrooms in fall.<\/p>\n<p>All participants will receive a free lunch, a thumb drive of all teaching materials, a kit of classroom materials and a certificate for 16 hours of professional development. An additional option to enroll in one continuing education credit at Adams State University will be offered for a small fee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrought and water shortages are quickly becoming prominent issues facing our youth,\u201d states a Mountain Studies news release. \u201cThrough this workshop, teachers will gain skills to help their students understand our water future through fun, interactive ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the expert speakers presenting at the workshop will be staff from the Dolores Water Conservancy District. Teachers will learn firsthand about current measures to plan for water shortages and drought mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Registration is at https:\/\/www.mountainstudies.org\/foreststofaucets and requires a $50 deposit, which will be refunded after completion of the workshop.
