(Morgan Lee\/Associated Press file)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Morgan Lee<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SANTA FE \u2013 Two New Mexico tribes have signed an agreement with state officials recognizing the tribes\u2019 authority to collect taxes on sales of cannabis products.<\/p>\n<p>The move announced by state officials Thursday after the agreement was signed last week further formalizes potential involvement in the cannabis industry by the Pojoaque and Picuris pueblos, both in northern New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Recreational marijuana sales began across the state on April 1, grossing around $2 million <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-business-texas-new-mexico-marijuana-f786a646543955f1db4a9e51cee79e8c\" id=\"link-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the first day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The agreement means that cannabis products can now be sold in the pueblos and taxed by the tribes much like cigarettes and gasoline are sold and taxed now, according to state Taxation and Revenue Department spokesman Charlie Moore.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s 12% tax on the product won\u2019t be levied on products sold by the tribes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Mexico has a strong history of collaborating with tribes to efficiently administer taxes while recognizing tribal sovereignty and the limitations of state authority on tribal lands,\u201d said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, and tribes are warily preparing to enter the industry in a legal gray zone.
