Pete Lee, a Colorado Springs Democrat and the chair of the influential Senate Judiciary Committee, has been indicted on a felony charge alleging that he lied about where he lives for the purpose of voting.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors in El Paso County said on Tuesday that Lee is accused of providing false information as to his residence, a Class 5 felony.<\/p>\n<p>Lee had previously been accused of not living in his state Senate district \u2013 Senate District 11 \u2013 which is a requirement under state law. The <em id=\"emphasis-4c476ea99a789eff0ccd920caac57bbe\">Colorado Springs Independent<\/em> reported in June 2020 that Lee listed his address as a house near downtown Colorado Springs that is in his Senate district instead of a home twice the size in Cheyenne Ca\u00f1on, which is listed as his wife\u2019s home but is in a different district, Senate District 12.<\/p>\n<p>A blurb about Lee that was on the El Paso County Democrats website when he was running to represent Senate District 11 said he and his wife lived in Cheyenne Ca\u00f1on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go back and forth quite a bit,\u201d he told the <em id=\"emphasis-753f519a15ae65ea534983ccc9bc8800\">Independent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>State law also requires legislative candidates to live in the district they wish to represent for at least a year.<\/p>\n<p>The grand jury indictment, which is five pages long, alleges Lee on March 3, 2020, \u201cvoted giving false information regarding the elector\u2019s place of present residence.\u201d March 3, 2020, was the date of the presidential primary.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6e35d8ce-a000-5651-9d3a-65a2d3e5ecc2&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1024\" height=\"663\" alt=\"State Sen. Lee\u2019s first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Lee didn\u2019t immediately return a voicemail seeking comment on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Senate President Steve Fenberg, D-Boulder, called Lee a \u201cdedicated public servant who has spent his career supporting his community and working to improve the lives of all Coloradans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust he\u2019ll have a fair opportunity to be heard and that the legal process will allow for an airing of all of the facts,\u201d Fenberg said in a written statement. \u201cAt his request, Senator Lee has been removed from his interim committee assignments until this matter is resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee was appointed in June to chair an interim committee charged with weighing whether the state should change how it investigates and disciplines judges.<\/p>\n<p>Lee is not running for reelection this year after completing a four-year term in the Senate.
