{"id":38235,"date":"2022-09-25T00:18:06","date_gmt":"2022-09-25T06:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/city-of-cortez-agrees-to-affordable-housing-study\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T02:42:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T08:42:57","slug":"city-of-cortez-agrees-to-affordable-housing-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/city-of-cortez-agrees-to-affordable-housing-study\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Cortez agrees to affordable-housing study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6afc5288-3188-4634-81dc-e0452b6ab5bc&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1333\" height=\"559\" alt=\"An artist\u2019s rendition of what the Calkins Commons will look like once completed.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">An artist\u2019s rendition of what the Calkins Commons will look like once completed.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Housing Authority of the County of Montezuma<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The city of Cortez has agreed to hire a consultant for $46,000 to conduct a needs assessment for affordable workforce housing.<\/p>\n<p>The state grant for $25,000 is available, and the city would match it with $21,000.<\/p>\n<p>Employers for businesses, schools, the health care industry, hospitality sector and others have \u201cexpressed major difficulty in attracting and hiring workers because they cannot find housing that they can afford,\u201d Economic Development Director Rachel Marchbanks said at the City Countil meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13.<\/p>\n<p>Once the housing assessment is completed, it opens up additional grant funding opportunities for projects, such as utility infrastructure improvements, which would facilitate development of more affordable housing, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a housing needs assessment is vital for the community,\u201d said Cortez Councilmember Lydia DeHaven. \u201cWe all know issues are out there, but without data we can\u2019t really do anything. (With an assessment) we can rely on advice from experts who work in the field.
