(Cedar Attanasio\/The Associated Press)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Cedar Attanasio<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico State Police will conduct checkpoints and saturation patrols in counties across the state throughout October to help reduce DUI deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers will be asked for a license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance, said a news release from deputy information officer Ray Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are bringing awareness to these events to reduce impaired driving-related fatalities through continued media attention and intensive advertising,\u201d the news release said.<\/p>\n<p>The checkpoints are intended to help change attitudes about driving while under the influence of liquor or drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of lives could be saved each year if every driver had the courage to make the right decision not to drive impaired,\u201d the news release said.<\/p>\n<p>Although the State Patrol has no data \u201cfrom studies or research that demonstrates the effectiveness of DWI checkpoints in saving lives,\u2019 Wilson said that if a checkpoint \u201cprevents one fatal DWI crash by taking an intoxicated driver off the road, it has been effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Locations of checkpoints are determined by analyzing <a href=\"https:\/\/gps.unm.edu\/tru\/crash-reports\/fatality-reports\" id=\"link-245f33099e67efea3166af77e020fd2c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geospatial and Population Studies<\/a> conducted by the University of New Mexico in cooperation with New Mexico Department of Transportation, Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>Citations issued at checkpoints for driver\u2019s license, insurance and registration infractions do not raise revenue because they require mandatory court appearances before a judge, not fines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>to change attitudes about driving impaired<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":38126,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[168,480],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-38125","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-crime","tag-dui"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/38125","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=38125"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/38125\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":83927,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/38125\/revisions\/83927"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/38126"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=38125"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=38125"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=38125"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=38125"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
