Lauren Boebert targeted Durango School District 9-R on Monday during a Mesa County Republican Women luncheon where she repeated a well-refuted lie that school districts across the country are providing litter boxes to children \u201cwho identify as cats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDurango is doing this,\u201d Boebert said, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradotimesrecorder.com\/2022\/10\/they-are-putting-litter-boxes-in-schools-for-people-who-identify-as-cats-says-boebert-not-true-responds-durango-school-district\/49272\/\" id=\"link-8cad46c9b6598e78a57d879abdbdc6d6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report by the Colorado Times Recorder<\/a><em id=\"emphasis-40068198735fffbde700f8390f2c7982\">. <\/em>\u201cThis is how extreme it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durango School District said the statement is false and disparaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, we don\u2019t provide litter boxes; our children use bathrooms,\u201d Karla Sluis, spokeswoman for district, told <em id=\"emphasis-d265c83f5560e12c0d726a9980a6a651\">The Durango Herald<\/em> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">What are \u2018furries\u2019?<\/h4>\n<p>Furscience, the public face of International Anthropomorphic Research Project, a group of scientists studying furry fandom to help people better understand its culture, describes furries as \u201ca diverse community of artists, writers, gamers and role players who are <a href=\"https:\/\/furscience.com\/whats-a-furry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interested in anthropomorphized animal characters<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sluis said she is dismayed that Boebert\u2019s false comments, which have been flung by other Republican politicians in Colorado and across the country for months, are receiving any attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no sense that teachers would ever have litter boxes anywhere, and yet this rumor seems to keep getting perpetuated, not just in Durango but all over the country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said comments such as Boebert\u2019s are efforts to undermine public education and insinuate that schools are \u201cgoing too far in celebrating our students\u2019 unique identities\u201d and are \u201cvery hurtful to children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have over 30 Native American tribes represented in our schools, which is amazing. And of course a huge Latinx community. We just want to make sure that the diversity of our students is celebrated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said Boebert and others should \u201cthink twice\u201d before making false, disparaging comments because they could make students \u201cfeel embarrassed that they\u2019re being singled out in what is essentially a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said children can develop mental health issues when they are made to feel like they don\u2019t belong, and a sense of belonging is a core focus of the school district\u2019s diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Belonging\u2019 is an important part of being a student,\u201d she said. \u201cYou might think back to how you felt as a middle schooler or an elementary student or even in high school. The need to belong is very strong and it\u2019s a kind of a deal-breaker on whether a kid will engage in school or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a text message to <em id=\"emphasis-abd0c0f70c7c235575944459e8086bee\">The Durango Herald<\/em>, Sluis added that the school district believes in teaching critical thinking, respectful treatment of others and behaving with integrity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe silver lining of this ridiculous claim is that it is a good teachable moment about behavior to avoid,\u201d Sluis said.<\/p>\n<p>She said she\u2019d rather Durango School District receive attention for its recent SAT, PST and Colorado Measures of Academic Success test scores that placed the district among the top 20% of schools in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Kristin Smith, president of the Durango Board of Education, also highlighted students\u2019 testing achievements. In an email to the <em id=\"emphasis-afa103124a01580ce0ce4a488bc88998\">Herald<\/em>, she declined to comment on what she thinks about Boebert\u2019s statements, but affirmed that all Durango School District schools use standard restrooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a Board, we are laser focused on all students receiving the very best education in our Durango 9-R School District,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2026 The Board is so proud of our students and staff who have worked so hard through the pandemic to rise to the top 20% of schools in the state of Colorado for student achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 16, Durango School District announced in a news release that several of its schools \u201chad very high growth on English Language Arts (ELA) and math with growth rates of 70 and above.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The test scores placed the school district in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoschools.org\/apps\/news\/article\/1658866#:~:text=Students%20and%20teachers%20have%20a,%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Superintendent%20Karen%20Cheser.\" id=\"link-23b3514ff320ec9cf482a789c92c6fdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top 20% of Colorado schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a big win for everyone \u2013 students, parents, staff, and community,\u201d Superintendent Karen Cheser said in the release. \u201cIt\u2019s clear evidence of our district\u2019s success and our students\u2019 increasing achievement \u2013 even during a challenging pandemic year.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Nonsense claims debunked<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-youtube naviga-video-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3_RLTKExo1M\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The claim that school districts are placing litter boxes in school bathrooms received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/apr\/08\/facebook-posts\/claim-about-schools-providing-litter-boxes-student\/\" id=\"link-2ee33bf43eb45c5ef93b933610e3f01a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pants on Fire! rating<\/a> from PoliticFact in April, which said \u201cschool districts in Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska have debunked claims that they are providing litter boxes in bathrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press also debunked claims in April in Dansville Central School in western New York, attributing dismissal of the rumor to Dansville Central School District Superintendent Paul Alioto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdministrators across dozens of districts, from Michigan to Texas to Wisconsin and New York, have batted down the false narrative, which has been promoted on social media by radio hosts, politicians and pundits who have used it to drum up outrage toward school policies on gender and bathroom use,\u201d the AP reported.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska Sen. Bruce Bostelman, a Republican, issued a public apology in March for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nebraska-lincoln-316c87249779706d6d78b58641c4a75e\" id=\"link-82f34b7ff5a80502e33b1ebbdca29438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spreading the same rumor<\/a> that school districts are providing litter boxes in bathrooms for students \u201cwho identify as cats,\u201d according to another AP report.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b02da9e0-6554-5cab-80f7-5fca55d1da8e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Boebert\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Boebert<\/span><span class=\"credit\">William Woody for Colorado Newsline<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Boebert\u2019s comments on Monday mark at least the second time she\u2019s engaged in falsehoods about schools and furry culture.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 9, Boebert spoke at the 2022 Truth &amp; Liberty Coalition Conference in Woodland Park, where she told a story similar to the one she shared Monday in Mesa County.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to what the <em id=\"emphasis-9e2ddbdebc7483eb42c2923010662408\">Colorado Times Recorder<\/em> reported about Boebert\u2019s comments about Durango School District, the congresswoman set up her spiel with an anecdote about a report she received from a concerned parent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in Michigan and a man told me that his son got in trouble because he stepped on a furry\u2019s tail in school,\u201d she said at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>She said furries were described to her as people who think they are cats or dogs and followed with, \u201cI think your son needs to go to school and identify as a trapper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boebert\u2019s congressional office did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=0d48e09f-0a9f-5593-88e1-21c4a0315b9f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Frisch\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Frisch<\/span><span class=\"credit\">William Woody for Colorado Newsline<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Adam Frisch, the Democratic challenger running in Colorado District 3 to unseat Boebert, said in an interview Thursday that 99% of Coloradan\u2019s concerns with education are what kids should be taught in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudy after study shows that good teachers in bad schools are better than bad teachers in good schools, and the vast majority of teachers are great in our district,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said teachers need to be compensated appropriately, respected and honored for their work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the best way to make sure we have kids that grow up to be good students and good citizens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-64114489c2959eecd964bd3a9e33798f\"><a href=\"mailto:cburney@durangoherald.com\">cburney@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>An earlier version of this story used an incorrect mathematical concept \u2013 percentile \u2013 in describing Durango School District 9-R\u2019s test scores.
