Kayla Shaggy wants to take you on an adventure.<\/p>\n

Her latest comic, \u201cAnathema,\u201d is the story of twin Din\u00e9 sisters who embark on a journey to find their mother\u2019s murderer.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s unique about this comic is where the story is set \u2013 the twins\u2019 journey takes place in a medieval fantasy world. It\u2019s a setting that not only appeals to Shaggy as a genre, but also holds bigger importance to her and her work as an Indigenous artist (she is Din\u00e9 and Annishinabe).<\/p>\n

\u201cI really like medieval fantasy. I grew up watching the original \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 movies with my mom \u2013 I had to sit down for three hours, but it was really great, just really sucked me into that world,\u201d she said. \u201cI really like fantasy, but there\u2019s not a lot of Indigenous characters or themes within fantasy, so (there\u2019s) just kind of that love for it and also wanting to see representation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaggy, a 2017 Fort Lewis College graduate who now lives in Phoenix, in will be back in Durango on Thursday, Oct. 13, at Maria\u2019s Bookshop to talk about \u201cAnathema\u201d and sign copies of the comic.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnathema\u201d is a comic Shaggy has been working in since 2016, and readers will find a few themes within its 44 pages of drawings and text.<\/p>\n

\u201cThemes of like what makes a human a human and what makes a monster a monster. \u2026 Themes about family and working together,\u201d she said. \u201cAlso monsters \u2013 I love monsters and the classic hero\u2019s journey but what if it was done not out of something altruistic, just something that\u2019s done out of a personal want. It\u2019s not a very, I guess you could say heroic, journey because it\u2019s like the whole thing is revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaggy said her method of creating \u201cAnathema\u201d was different from her other comics.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor this one, I did something that I didn\u2019t do with my other comics \u2013 sometimes, I\u2019ll storyboard, which is a rough, physical image of the total comic. So planning out the panels and all that, but then I was like, \u2018I kind of didn\u2019t want to get focused on that because sometimes you end up sticking with the storyboard and then you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, wait, this idea could work better,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSo I sat down and did the penciling, which is the sketching. Once that was done, I did the inking and then after that, text and panel boxes and then once the pages were done, I would scan them, edit them on my computer and compile it into a PDF.\u201d<\/p>\n

And now that \u201cAnathema\u201d is out in the world, Shaggy said even though she\u2019s working on other projects, she plans to revisit the twins in another comic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely something I\u2019d want to continue doing because I really like the story,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
