{"id":37213,"date":"2022-11-17T02:15:05","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T09:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-school-board-discusses-attendance-security\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T02:36:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T08:36:12","slug":"cortez-school-board-discusses-attendance-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-school-board-discusses-attendance-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortez school board discusses attendance, security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=f35325b9-12a1-5a27-a8bd-781297421d11&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1112\" height=\"774\" alt=\"Screenshot via YouTubeMembers of the Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 Board of Education.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Screenshot via YouTubeMembers of the Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 Board of Education.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>At the Montezuma-Cortez\u00a0RE-1\u00a0Board\u00a0of Education meeting Nov. 15, board members discussed attendance rates, safety protocols and FFA\u2019s request to letter, among other agenda items.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Superintendent reports progress on attendance<\/div>\n<p>Superintendent Tom Burris reported that absenteeism has dropped significantly, saying that 115 students have accumulated more than 12 absences this year, compared with more than 1,260 last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sending letters to students who are not responding to interventions and will be making formal referrals to CPS (<a href=\"https:\/\/montezumacounty.org\/social-services\/child-protective-services\/\" id=\"link-91a3c578fe83305e7ec1f547ce868bb6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Child Protective Services<\/a>) for child neglect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Burris also said he was working with officials in Towaoc to help manage absences for students who live there.<\/p>\n<p>He also raised concern about student behavior, saying that \u201cextreme\u201d behavior at Mesa and Kemper elementaries has led staff to take measures to ensure the safety of teachers and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Superintendent Eddie Ramirez submitted a report assessing school security, which also was sent to campus principals, executive directors, directors and other staff.<\/p>\n<p>The board noted that the assessment showed multiple high school doors were not locked internally, and doors were propped open for entry from outside. The board was adamant the issue be fixed immediately for the safety of students and faculty.<\/p>\n<p>s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Finance report shows salary increase<\/div>\n<p>Director of Finance Kyle Archibeque presented financial reports for the quarter from July 1 through Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>Funds budgeted for the closed Manaugh Elementary will be distributed to Mesa and Kemper based on the number of Manaugh students and teachers who move to each school. The distributions will be reflected in the district\u2019s final budget in January.<\/p>\n<p>Teacher salaries also were increased for the 2022-2023 school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are putting more money into our teachers and not into a savings account,\u201d Archibeque said.<\/p>\n<p>Money for the salaries come from budget reserves \u2013 $1.7 million in 2020-2021 and an anticipated $1.5 million in 2021-2022.<\/p>\n<p>Reserves for the 2022-2023 school year will be $300,000 to $400,000.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021-2022 financial audit will be presented at the next board meeting, on Dec. 13, Archibeque said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">FFA approved to letter<\/div>\n<p>Future Farmers of America wrote a letter to the board asking that their club be eligible for a varsity letter to reflect student excellence.<\/p>\n<p>In their request, they noted that FFA exists to \u201ceducate youth about the importance and their role in agriculture\u201d while growing their leadership skills and promoting career success through agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The group hosts monthly meetings and participates in events and competitions throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters are awarded to students as a sign of achievement and for recognition,\u201d the group said in a letter to the board. \u201cJust like sports and academics, FFA students would be lettered because of an achievement in events that include important life skills such as public speaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many students who succeed tremendously through this program and deserve recognition just like band, sports, academics, etc.,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>The board unanimously passed the measure, allowing FFA to begin lettering for accomplishments in the chapter and for grades in agriculture classes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Other measures passed<\/div>\n<p>The board approved fiscal year 2022-2023 Empowering Action for School Improvement Program Funds grant application and School Health Professional Grant Program application.<\/p>\n<p>They also approved Mesa Elementary receiving a new walk-in cooler for $22,591.<\/p>\n<p>New policies that were approved included LBD Relations with Charter Schools, which says the board encourages district charters to \u201cdevelop an education program to serve the needs of students considered \u2018at risk\u2019 academically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The KB Parent and Family Engagement in Education will work to bolster parent and familial involvement in the schools, appointing a staff member as liaison to parents, the board and the Colorado Department of Education to introduce \u201cparent engagement training and resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to be more transparent with the community, KD Public Information and Communications was approved to show the board\u2019s commitment to being upfront about new policies, administrative opportunities and educational programs with the public.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Celebration reports<\/div>\n<p>The school board meeting kicked off with celebration reports of recent student athletic success, namely the Panthers\u2019 spot in the semifinals of the Colorado Class 2A tournament. The board noted that this is the furthest the team has made it in 65 years.<\/p>\n<p>Kickoff against defending champion and No. 2-ranked Eaton is 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.
