{"id":36761,"date":"2022-12-15T23:33:45","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T06:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/dolores-high-school-wrestling-is-on-the-rise\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T02:33:32","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T08:33:32","slug":"dolores-high-school-wrestling-is-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/dolores-high-school-wrestling-is-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Dolores High School wrestling is on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4d35f54f-e8e9-4649-bca8-87edaced0244&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"800\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Dolores High School wrestler Akima Edwards recently competed in her first State Championship.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Dolores High School wrestler Akima Edwards recently competed in her first State Championship.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Ian MacLaren\/For The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>For all the area schools, the trend is clear \u2013 wrestling is back in the Four Corners.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of seasons with lighter numbers, Dolores High School wrestling joins the uptick in program growth across the region, building a positive energy that head coach Casen Eldredge hopes will translate into success on and off the mat this winter.<\/p>\n<p>Under the guidance of Eldredge and assistant coach Melody Harris, who will guide the girls program, the Bears look to make waves in the 2A regional field this upcoming February.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors Braden Schmittel and Ethen Robson pace the way for the Bears, in competition as well as in practice. Schmittel, taking on the role of captain in his final year in red and black, looks to help bring along a youthful group that\u2019s hungry for success.<\/p>\n<p>Robson, meanwhile, is no stranger to tangling with some of the area\u2019s strongest athletes \u2013 as a linebacker for the Dolores football program, Robson led the team in tackles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate that they lead by example,\u201d added Harris of the senior leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears brought half of their squad to Dove Creek for the Dawg Fight on Saturday, Dec. 10, and learned plenty from their tough challenges against area powers Mancos and Dove Creek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re focused on getting everyone healthy for after the holiday break,\u201d said Eldredge, \u201cand from there, the goal is to make sure that we\u2019re improving every week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tenacity is there,\u201d added Eldredge, \u201cand that determination to not give up is something that we\u2019ll build on for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Dolores is the only area school with a girls program this season, and the Bears have three athletes set to take the mat this winter. After CHSAA added girls wrestling as a separate classification two years ago, DHS has looked to continue to build off the initial interest shown last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe girls are starting to get a feel for it,\u201d said Harris of the girls program, which includes a pair of DHS seniors, including multisport athlete Akima Edwards, \u201cand we see that there\u2019s plenty of potential there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Eldredge and Harris bring plenty of knowledge to the circle, having both competed at the collegiate level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re building a culture at DHS that teaches these athletes to be strong-willed and dedicated,\u201d said Harris, \u201cand that requires that the kids coming out and trusting their coaches and pushing each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One more tournament awaits the Bears before the holidays, when they join Dove Creek in their eastward trip to Walsenburg for the John Mall-hosted Pete and Ina Gomez Tournament on Dec. 16-17.
